Jamestown CC Women Outlast Sheridan College

When you don’t have your “A Game” you need to dig inside and pull out a win.

That’s exactly what the Jamestown Community College Jayhawks did to earn a 60-56 home win over the Sheridan College Bruins inside the Physical Education Complex on Sunday afternoon.

Jamestown CC started the game looking for a blowout, building an early 9-2 lead after the first quarter.

Bethan Wallace (Toronto, Canada/Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts) got the scoring started with a layup. The 2 points were part of her 10 on the day. It was a special day for Wallace, who is a Toronto native and was playing the Bruins, a team from down the street in her hometown.

The second quarter was a much closer battle.

Jamestown’s lead grew to 10 on a 3-pointer from Keturah Stewart (Bethlehem, Pennsylvania/Freedom HS), who finished the day with a team-high 18 points.

The game then evened out, with Jamestown CC holding a 22-16 advantage going to the locker room at halftime.

Sheridan started the third on fire, drawing to a tie at 25-25.

Jamestown CC’s Courtney Martin (Bemus Point/Maple Grove Jr.-Sr. HS) snatched the lead back with a rebound and a putback to make it 27-25, but the teams would go to the final stanza all knotted up at 37-37.

The Bruins took their first lead of the game shortly after the start of the fourth when Damika Wanrer hit a bunny. She had a game-high 21.

Jamestown would fall behind by as much as four before Grace Lundmark (Falconer/Falconer CS) took over. She finished the game with 15 points and 13 rebounds.

The Jayhawks were up just two with five seconds left on the clock, but Myla Truitt (Tuscon, Arizona/Pueblo HS) was clutch at the charity stripe, knocking down a pair to give the Jayhawks the 60-56 final.

The win is four out of five for Jamestown CC.

The ladies are off until Wednesday, when they travel north to Sanborn to take on Mohawk Valley CC in Niagara County CC’s Martin Luther King Jr. Tournament.
