Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer Splits Two Pool Matches

SYRACUSE — Chautauqua/Westfield/Panama/Clymer wrestling head coach Ken Rowe’s comments in advance of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Dual Meet Championships were prophetic.

“You don’t get a double elimination where you can wrestleback and earn it, you are kind of done if the numbers don’t match up,” he told The Post-Journal last week. “That’s one of the tough things about this tournament. You have to get through your pool and then you do the best with what you have.”

On Saturday at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena, the fifth-seeded Eagles, after a first-round bye, won their first-round Division 2 Pool B match 54-10 over Northern Adirondack of Section VII, but suffered a 38-26 setback against Palmyra Macedon of Section V in their second match, which eliminated them from advancing to the semifinals.

Section IV Tioga won its third straight title by knocking off Palmyra Macedon 51-24 in the semifinals and then downing John G. Glenn 56-12 in the final.

Despite not reaching the semifinals, Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer, which qualified for this year’s event by beating Southwestern at the Section VI Division II championships earlier this month, turned in some fine individual performances. Recording pins against Northern Adirondack were Gavin Burchanowski (108 pounds), Thandon Bensink (116), Mason Munoz (138), Jordan Joslyn (152), Evan Riedesel (170), Mason Maring (215) and Walter Lukasiak (134).

Against Palmyra Macedon, the Eagles’ falls were turned in by Alex Bourgeois (101), Christopher Bowen (108), Burchanowski (116) and Joslyn (145).

The event included 24 teams competing in two divisions, composed from the 11 NYSPHSAA sections. Each section sent a representative for each division (excluding Section VII in Division 1) and there are also two at-large entries for Division 1 and two at-large entries for Division 2. Each team competed in three pool play matches with the top four teams in each division advancing to the semifinals.

The Division 1 teams included Yorktown (I), Cicero N. Syracuse (III),Saratoga (II), Carthage (III), Horseheads (IV), Hilton (V), Niagara Wheatfield (VI), Plainedge (VIII), Wantagh (VIII), Middletown (IX), Minisink Valley (IX) and North Babylon (XI).

The Division 2 teams included Sleepy Hollow (I), Cobleskill/Richmondville (2), Central Valley Academy (III), Tioga (IV), Palmyra-Macedon (V), Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer (VI), Northern Adirondack (VII), John Glenn (VIII), WT Clarke (VIII) Island Trees (VIII), Port Jervis (IX) and Gouverneur (X).
