Five local Class C boys teams are mentioned by the New York State Sportswriters Association in this week’s rankings.

They’ll all be in action tonight and tomorrow with four of them playing each other.

Randolph remains the top team in the state, as it has been since winning the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship last winter. The Cardinals, who edged Falconer and coasted past Frewsburg last week, will host honorable-mention Gowanda tonight in Randolph.

The Panthers, who lost to Portville last week and again to Frewsburg on Tuesday night, may find themselves out of the rankings with a loss tonight.

No. 2 Westfield, which beat Brocton and Chautauqua Lake last week, topped Sherman on Wednesday and will visit No. 25 Maple Grove on Friday night. The Red Dragons moved from honorable mention into the top 25 with victories over Falconer and Sherman last week. They strengthened their case with a win over Chautauqua Lake on Tuesday night in Mayville.

Panama is No. 6 in Class C after picking up wins over Sherman, Clymer and Pine Valley last week. Head coach Ed Nelson — who picked up his 200th career victory last week — will take his Panthers to Chautauqua Lake tonight.

In Class B, Salamanca is No. 8 and Fredonia is No. 9. The Warriors beat Allegany-Limestone and Dunkirk last week, while the Hillbillies beat Dunkirk and Southwestern last week before topping Frewsburg on Monday afternoon. Salamanca and Fredonia will play tonight in Salamanca with first place in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 West on the line.

Jamestown sits at No. 18 in Class AA after winning on the road at No. 21 Frontier last Thursday. The Red Raiders will host honorable-mention Orchard Park on Friday night before they are scheduled to visit Bishop Timon — the state’s top-ranked Class AA team — on Saturday afternoon.

Other local teams ranked include: Niagara Falls (Class AAA, No. 14), Lancaster (Class AAA, HM), Canisius (Class AA, No. 12), Health Sciences (Class AA, No. 22), Niagara Wheatfield (Class AA, HM), Nichols (Class AA, HM), St. Joe’s (Class AA, HM), Amherst (Class A, No. 11), Grand Island (Class A, HM), St. Mary’s (Class A, HM), Pioneer (Class A, HM), Williamsville South (Class A, HM), Newfane (Class B, No. 3), Middle Early College (Class B, No. 19), Akron (Class B, HM) and Eden (Class B, HM).
