Trojans’ Cotter, CLCS’s Engdahl, Olson Named First-Team All-State

The Chautauqua Lake and Southwestern volleyball teams both had runs to the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championships in Glens Falls last month.

Chautauqua Lake seniors Brynn Engdahl, Ava Olson and Breaunna Smith led the way to a state title in Class D, while Southwestern seniors Lauren Cotter and Jaidyn Newhouse led the first girls program in school history to a state tournament.

Several players from both teams are receiving recognition at the state level for their terrific seasons, highlighted by Engdahl and Olson receiving First Team All-State selections in Class D and Cotter making First Team All-State in Class B.

Over the course of the season, Engdahl recorded 175 kills, 60 aces, 349 digs and 43 assists and finished strong at states making the All-Tournament Team. Olson finished with 220 kills, 104 aces, 14 blocks, 332 digs and 318 assists while finishing strong in Glens Falls as the Tournament Most Valuable Player. Joining her teammates on the Class D All-Tournament team at states was eighth-grader Noli Paddock. On the year, Paddock collected 152 kills, 39 aces, 52 blocks and 25 assists to earn a Second-Team All-State selection. Smith made Third-Team All-State, wrapping up the year with 149 kills, 61 aces and 28 blocks.

The only team to beat Chautauqua Lake this season was its rival, Panama, and the Panthers saw two seniors receive Second-Team All-State selections in Corinne Hovey and Sarah Harvey. On the year, Hovey had 43 aces and 220 digs, while Harvey made 197 kills, 54 aces and 151 digs.

Westfield’s Tanleigh Bestine was named a Fourth Team All-State selection in Class D after recording 300 assists, 76 kills, 64 aces, 71 digs and 39 blocks.

Cotter paved the way for Southwestern’s berth into the state championships and once she got there she stood out to make the All-Tournament Team in Class B. Cotter wrapped up the year with 266 kills, 142 digs, 86 aces and 37 blocks. Newhouse ended her Southwestern career with a Second-Team All-State selection in Class B after recording 166 kills, 35 aces and 32 blocks for the Trojans this year.

In Class C, Eve Adams led Randolph to a Section VI Class C2 title before falling to eventual state champion Portville. Adams earned a Fourth-Team All-State selection in Class C after registering 417 kills, 180 digs and 76 aces for the Cardinals.

Falconer’s Hannah Melquist received a Fifth-Team All-State selection in Class C after guiding the Golden Falcons to a sectional final appearance against Portville. Melquist finished the year with 430 assists, 137 digs, 90 aces and 170 kills.

Portville claimed its third straight state championship in Class C and its players were rewarded for that accomplishment. Ava Haynes, Lillian Bentley and Mia Rhinehart all were First-Team All-State and Adelyn Walker made Second-Team All-State.
