Southwestern put its early stamp on the local high school wrestling scene over the weekend.

Competing at the Sweet Home Duals on Friday and Saturday in Amherst, the Trojans went 8-0 to claim first place over Churchville-Chili, Lancaster, Clarence, Grand Island, North Tonawanda, Ken-Ton, Sweet Home, CSAT and Wilson.

On Friday, Southwestern beat Clarence 54-24, Grand Island 48-24, Lancaster 45-24 and Wilson 48-27.

Saturday morning, the Trojans topped Ken-Ton 57-18 before beating North Tonawanda 54-18.

After breezing past CSAT 66-6, the stage was set for a showdown with Section V power Churchville-Chili, the defending champion which was also 7-0 on the weekend entering the match.

With the match tied 33-33 entering the final weight, Southwestern 108-pounder Miles Torres pinned Giancarlo Costanzo for the final 6 points and the title.

The Trojans’ Kenji Walters went 8-0 on the weekend, including a pin of Churchville-Chili’s Malik Abdullah, at 124 pounds.

Southwestern’s Adrian Torres also went 8-0, including a pin of the Saints’ Danny Glover at 101 pounds to tie the final match at 33-all.

The Trojans’ Neves Hoose was undefeated in all eight matches, including a takedown of Churchville-Chili’s Andrew Frost at 170 pounds.

Southwestern’s Tavio Hoose earned Most Outstanding Wrestler honors after finishing 8-0 with a 4-3 decision over the Saints’ Coy Raines at 215 pounds. Hoose won the Division II New York State Public High School Athletic Association 172-pound championship last winter, while Raines was a place finisher at 160 pounds in Division 1.

The Trojans’ Carmine Calimeri went 7-1 on the weekend, earning his 100th career win along the way at 131 pounds. Against Churchville-Chili, Calimeri pinned Carter Walworth.

Miles Torres also went 7-1, as did Brayden Potter, whose only loss came against Churchville-Chili.
