FREWSBURG — Rob Collver’s teams are usually pretty good at taking care of the ball and can turn over the opposition as good as anybody.
On Friday, Hutch Tech beat the Bears at their own game.
The Engineers scored 20 points off 23 Frewsburg turnovers en route to a 65-50 victory in the championship game of the Frewsburg Holiday Tournament at Frewsburg Middle/High School.
David Washington, the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, led Hutch Tech with 23 points, while all-tournament team member DJ Holman added 10. Robert Rodriguez also scored 10 points for the Engineers.
Gavin Smith, the Bears’ all-tournament team representative, led all scorers with 29 points to go along with six rebounds and three steals. Kael Collver grabbed eight rebounds and blocked four shots, while Blake Weaver also had eight rebounds for Frewsburg. Garrett Brink and Mason Eckman had three assists apiece in the loss.
The Bears took a 9-5 lead midway through the first quarter on a Garrett Brink basket, but didn’t score for the remainder of the period as Hutch Tech closed the quarter on a 17-0 run to lead 22-9. Washington scored 10 points and Holman added 5 during the opening eight minutes, while Frewsburg turned the ball over 10 times and went 4 of 11 from the field.
The Engineers’ run continued with the first nine points of the second quarter before Smith finally ended the 27-0 run with a basket, but by then the Bears’ hole was too much to overcome.
Hutch Tech led 37-16 at halftime and 58-34 at the end of three quarters.
While Frewsburg did cut the deficit to as little as 14 in the final quarter, the outcome was never really in doubt.
Nick Jacobson scored 26 points and Chautauqua Lake’s representative on the all-tournament team, Nate Henry, scored 18 points as the Eagles beat Brocton 61-36 in the consolation game.
Chautauqua Lake led 15-5 after the first quarter and 29-17 at halftime.
Jeremy Weisner led the Bulldogs with 15 points, while Brocton’s representative on the all-tournament team, Michael Garcia, added 8 points.
