SILVER CREEK — Silver Creek boys basketball coach Ralph Jackson calls senior Ray Cortes an “incredible player.”
Monday night was just the most recent example.
Cortes scored 30 points, grabbed 16 rebounds, and collected six steals, six assists and four blocks to lead Silver Creek to a 72-53 victory over Chautauqua Lake in a nonleague basketball game Monday night.
Oh, by the way, Cores also surpassed the 1,000-point career mark with a free throw in the third quarter.
“He’s just big and strong, he finishes around the rim and he can shoot,” Jackson said. “He’s now become the eighth boy in Silver Creek history to go over 1,000 points and gets to join his uncles, Zeddie Williams and Billy Brooks.”
Sparked by Cortes’ 11 points in the first quarter, the Black Knights jumped out to an 18-14 lead after the first quarter and were in front 36-25 at halftime. But a 21-7 run in the third quarter gave the hosts some breathing room en route to improving to 2-1 on the season.
Jose Pratts added 10 points and eight rebounds for the winners.
Nick Jacobson paced Chautauqua Lake (1-1) with 16 points and four rebounds; and Asher Olson added 11 points.
