JCC Men Split Pair Of ‘Classic’ Games

SANBORN — Aubry Nicholson’s layup with 10 seconds remaining gave the Jamestown Community College men’s basketball team the lead for good to cap an incredible comeback, but the Jayhawks had to survive a crazy ending to post a 63-62 victory over Lackawanna College in the Niagara County CC Tip-Off Classic on Saturday afternoon.

Fittingly, Saturday’s game came down to the wire — six of the Jayhawks’ contests this month have been decided by a total of 30 points — but it sure didn’t appear in the early going that would be the case again.

In fact, Lackawanna College led 41-20 at halftime as it limited Jamestown CC to 29% shooting while holding a 26-12 rebounding advantage.

After the break, however, the Jayhawks were a different team, outscoring the Pennsylvania school 43-21 and hanging on for the victory.

Barely.

After Nicholson’s layup gave Jamestown CC a one-point lead with 10 seconds remaining, the Falcons’ Joey Chapman missed a pair of free throws with seven seconds remaining. Jean Saint-Fort was immediately fouled, making one of two attempts to give the Jayhawks a 63-61 lead. With one second remaining, Lackawanna CC’s Amir Mack was fouled, but after making the first attempt, he missed the second, allowing Jamestown CC to escape with the victory.

Nicolson and Jhamien Smith led the Jayhawks with 17 points apiece and Iverson Plaza chipped in 11. Of their 45 combined points, 32 came after intermission. Nicholson also grabbed nine rebounds and had six steals. Saint-Fort chipped in eight boards.

Mack paced the Falcons with 24 points and 17 rebounds and Pablo Avalos Ortiz contributed 11.

Neither team shot well from the foul line — the Jayhawks were 9 of 23, while Lackawanna CC was 15 of 32 — and they combined for 49 turnovers.

On Sunday, the Jayhawks (2-6) suffered another close loss, 78-73, to Henry Ford College.

Smith led the Jayhawks with 21 points, Nicholson added 19 and Moorhead chipped in 14 for Jamestown CC, which trailed 40-30 at halftime.

For Henry FordChasey Willis poured in 26 points and dished out six assists.
