Night Spoiled

Jamestown Dealt First Loss, Falling To Lancaster On Homecoming 41-21

Lightning delayed the showdown between two of New York state’s best Class AA football teams for nearly an hour Friday night.

But it was the figurative “storm” that did in No. 20 Jamestown after play resumed.

Lancaster, which was listed as honorable mention in this week’s New York State Sportswriters Association poll, scored four touchdowns in less than five minutes spanning the second and third quarters en route to a convincing 41-21 victory over the Red Raiders at Strider Field.

Chris Gill rushed for three touchdowns; Jayden Colon ran for a TD and caught a pass for another score; quarterback Alex Krupa tossed a pair of touchdown passes; and Lancaster’s defense held Jamestown in check until the game had long since been decided.

The win improves the Legends’ record to 5-1 overall and 5-1 in the division. The Red Raiders, meanwhile, fall to 5-1 and 3-1, and likely head into next week’s game against No. 7 Bennett without the services of senior Carsen Bane, their leading tackler and ball carrier, who suffered an apparent knee injury late in the second quarter.

With Bane sidelined on crutches, Jamestown kept the game close for a while– it trailed 14-7 when lightning was detected with 1:42 left in the first half — but once play resumed the Legends dominated.

From the 1:35 mark of the second quarter until the 8:34 mark of the third quarter, Lancaster found the end zone on Krupa passes of 65 and 30 yards to Colon and John Gang, respectively, and runs of 4 and 7 yards by Gill.

Armed with a 41-7 lead, it was not the kind of homecoming night the Red Raiders envisioned, especially after streamrolling to five straight victories to begin the season.

“I thought we were coming out (after the) break … with some good adjustments, but it just didn’t work out. It wasn’t our night,” Jamestown head coach Tom Langworthy said. “Lancaster played a good game, hat’s off to them. We didn’t do what we wanted to do on either side of the ball. It was just a tough night. Those things happen in coaching. We just have to bounce back.”

Unofficially, Krupa completed 7 of 11 passes for 137 yards and the two TDs; Gill rushed for 96 yards on 18 carries and Colon added 83 yards on 10 trips.

Meanwhile, Jamestown’s touchdowns came on quarterback Jack Carlson’s 10-yard pass to Carson Panebianco in the second quarter, and runs of 5 and 3 yards by Cole Bloomquist and Nate Sanchez, respectively, in the final period.

Bloomquist led the Red Raiders with 130 yards on 18 carries; Keith Miller added 89 yards on 15 trips; Sanchez ran for 53 yards on six carries; Chase Bonta had 38 yards on five carries; and Bane had 20 yards on four carries before leaving the game with the injury.

Bloomquist was also a force defensively as he was credited with 16 tackles, Tommy Pratton had 11, Panebianco nine, Miller eight and Bonta seven.

Cole is a great kid,” Langworthy said of Bloomquist. “I was really proud of him. … He showed some grit and some class. … He is a high-character kid. … When things weren’t looking good, he didn’t change how he carried himself.”

But it wasn’t enough against the Legends, whose lone loss came last week against Bennett by a score of 44-20.

The Red Raiders will host the Tigers next week — without Bane.

“I feel for him and his family,” Langworthy said. ” … Let’s hope it’s not as bad as it could be. We’ll have to see what happens. The next guy up has to represent him. That’s our mindset. We can’t feel sorry for ourselves. We’ve just got to keep rolling. Tomorrow is a new day and next week is a new week.”
