SILVER CREEK -- Carter Capozzi had quite the start under center for Gowanda/Pine Valley in Friday night's nonleague football game against Silver Creek/Forestville. The sophomore quarterback went 7 for 13 for 88 yards and threw three touchdowns in the first half en route to a 44-14 victory.
Capozzi's throwing allowed the Panthers to build a 22-0 lead by halftime, starting with a 30-yard touchdown to Jon Sheldon in the first quarter and the 2-point conversion gave to an 8-0 lead. Then Capozzi found the end zone through the air twice in the second quarter hitting Brayden Smith from five yards out and then Quentin Centner for a 25-yard score to build the 22-0 lead at halftime.
Gowanda/Pine Valley kept it coming in the second half, with a huge interception returned 70 yards for a score. Then a Cameron Slade 26-yard run put the game further out of reach at 35-0.
The Black Knights (0-1) got on the board in the final quarter with two rushing touchdowns. The first one was a short scamper from Alex Galfo for five yards, then in response to a 41-yard Winter Mentley-Peters touchdown, Max Tenamore hit paydirt from 59 yards out to finalize the score at 43-14.
Along with Sheldon's interception, Gowanda/Pine Valley's (1-0) Brendin Diebel caused two turnovers with a fumble and interception himself.
