Legacy Awards To Be Presented At Aug. 14 Picnic
The Board of Directors of the Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame recently announced it will present its 2023 Legacy Awards at the organization’s annual picnic at the Lakewood Rod & Gun Club on Monday, Aug. 14.
The Bill Rollinger and Tony LeVoie Legacy Award will be given in honor of two outstanding swim coaches. Rollinger, a 1996 CSHOF inductee, was well-known for his success at Jamestown High School while LeVoie, a 1985 CSHOF inductee, is remembered for his work at the Jamestown Boys’ Club. The Rollinger and LeVoie Award will be given to an Outstanding Male High School Swimmer, Gannon Moore, from Southwestern Central School.
The Julie (Gawronski) Tickle Legacy Award honors the accomplishments of the 2016 CSHOF inductee who excelled at Dunkirk High and Union College in both soccer and softball. The Tickle Award will be presented to an Outstanding Female Multi-Sport High School Athlete, Mandy Brink, from Panama Central School.
The James A. Sharp Legacy Award honors the memory of the former Parks and Recreation Director for the City of Jamestown. The Sharp Award will be presented to an Outstanding Contributor to the Opportunity, Development and Growth of Sports and Recreation in Chautauqua County, Becky Nystrom from Jamestown.
The Ken Martin Legacy Award honors the 1997 CSHOF inductee who is arguably one of the finest baseball and softball players in Chautauqua County history. The Martin Award will be presented to an Outstanding High School Baseball Player, Tyler Karin, from Dunkirk High School.
The Tom Prechtl Legacy Award honors the former four-sport Fredonia Central star who went on to play basketball at Niagara University. The Prechtl Award will be presented to an Outstanding Male Multi-sport High School Athlete, Trey Drake from Jamestown High School.
The Grace M. Dolan Legacy Award will be given in honor of the longtime swimming official, Red Cross instructor and CSHOF director. The Dolan Award will be presented to an Outstanding Female High School Swimmer, Lindsey Spitz, from Jamestown High School.
The Jack Keeney Legacy Award honors the 2015 CSHOF inductee who was a beloved teacher, coach and administrator at Panama Central School. The Keeney Award will be given to two Outstanding Student-Athletes at Panama. Drake DiDomenico and Lilly Odell will be the 2023 recipients.
The Anthony “Dony” Deppas Legacy Award honors the memory of the well-known sports enthusiast and player from Jamestown. The Deppas Award will be presented to an Outstanding Male High School Basketball Player, Trey Drake from Jamestown High School.
The Mel Swanson Legacy Award honors the former basketball coach at Sherman Central who retired with the most victories in Chautauqua County history. The Swanson Award, presented to an Outstanding Female Basketball Player, will be given to Marley Drake from Jamestown High School.
The Nelson Turnell Legacy Award will be presented in honor of a member of the CSHOF’s very first inductee class. Turnell was known throughout the area as a first-rate player, an excellent coach and a man who loved the sport of tennis. The Turnell Award will be given to the Outstanding Male High School Tennis Player, Fletcher DeMink from Maple Grove Central School.
The Ted Olsen and Bill Present Legacy Award will be given in honor of two outstanding athletes from Jamestown High School in the 1940s. Ted Olsen, a 1999 CSHOF inductee was noted for his prowess on the JHS gridiron, while Present, a 2006 CSHOF inductee, starred on the hardwood at JHS. The Olsen and Present Award will be given to the Oustanding Male and Female Student-Athletes at Jamestown. Trey Drake and Kylie O’Brien will be the 2023 recipients.
The Sirianni Family Legacy Award honors CSHOF inductee Fran Sirianni, his wife, Amy, and his three sons, Mike, Jay and Nick. The Siriannis are well-known for their impressive accomplishments in football and track and field, the latter a sport Fran coached at Southwestern Central for nearly 40 years. The Sirianni Award will recognize an Outstanding High School Track and Field Athlete, Landon Stormer of Frewsburg Central High School.
The Dr. Charles E. Sinatra Legacy Award honors a man who is known nationwide for his remarkable ability to build and restore championship winning antique cars and motorcycles, but who quietly, behind-the scenes, and without seeking attention or thanks, has volunteered and supported sports and a wide-variety of other community activities to better the quality of life in Chautauqua County. The 2023 recipient of the Sinatra Award as an unsung hero of sports is John Lillie of Jamestown.
The President’s Legacy Award will be given by Randy Anderson to a member of the CSHOF Board of Directors who has performed Outstanding Service to the CSHOF. The recipient will be announced at the picnic.
The Cal Cederquist Legacy Award honors the 2013 CSHOF inductee who was a highly successful cross-country and track and field coach at Chautauqua Central School and later at Chautauqua Lake Central School. The Cederquist Award honors an Outstanding Track and Field Student-Athlete at Chautauqua Lake Central. The 2023 recipient is Elias Quintero.
The Women Coaches’ Legacy Award will be given in recognition of the important contributions women make in the coaching circles of Chautauqua County as a tribute to 2017 CSHOF inductee Deb Palmer, former volleyball and softball coach at Panama Central. The 2023 “Palmer” award will be given to the outstanding unified basketball coach at Fredonia Central School, Carol Zirkle.
The Lyle Peterson Legacy Award honors the memory of the well-known Jamestown businessman and sports enthusiast who had a great love for the sport of ice skating. The Peterson Award is presented to an outstanding contributor to the opportunity, development and growth of ice skating in Chautauqua County. The 2023 honoree is Barbi Price of Chautauqua.
The Eric Albin Larson Legacy Award honors the accomplishments of the son of CSHOF Director Fred Larson. Larson was a three-year varsity football player at JHS. He was a starting guard on the undefeated 2000 New York State Class AA Champions. He was the recipient of the 2000 NYS Football Scholar-Athlete Award for large schools. A graduate of Princeton and Vanderbilt, Larson is now a lawyer in Atlanta. The Larson Award will be presented to the most outstanding scholar-athlete on the 2022 Jamestown High School Football Team, Aric Bloomquist.
The Ramsay Riddell Legacy Award is endowed in honor of our 2015 inductee. Riddell was an outstanding ski jumper, skiing enthusiast and ski patroller. Born in Montreal, Riddell moved to Chautauqua County in 1948 and brought his love for skiing with him. He became involved with the organization of Peek’n Peak Ski Center in 1962, founded its ski patrol, and served as its director for almost three decades. The Riddell Award is presented to an outstanding contributor to winter sports in Chautauqua County, Brad Gravink of Clymer.
The Robert Goold Legacy Award was established to recognize the lifetime work of our 2020 inductee with the intellectually disabled in our county. Goold a well-known educator and coach had a passion for Special Olympics and the athletes who competed in it for nearly 50 years on the local, national and international levels. The 2023 Bob Goold Award is presented to an outstanding contributor to the development and growth of athletic opportunities for the intellectually disabled, Scotty James of Falconer.
The Chuck Crist Eminence Grise Award is given in honor of one of the finest all-around athletes in Western New York history. A standout basketball player at Penn State, Crist transitioned to defensive back and had a seven-year NFL career without playing a down of college football. The Crist Award recognizes a powerful decision maker or adviser who operates behind the scenes or in an unofficial capacity in sports in Chautauqua County. The 2023 recipient is Steve Garvey from Falconer.
The William “Bill” Short Legacy Award is presented by the 1963 graduate of Fredonia Central School who values the educational and athletic opportunities as had as a Hillbilly. The Short Award is presented to the outstanding male and female student-athletes at Fredonia, Ethan Fry and Gigi Ferro.
The Chip and Mary Beth Johnson Legacy Award recognizes the important role that officials play in sports in Chautauqua County. Chip Johnson, a basketball referee and baseball and softball umpire for many years, as well as the CSHOF Induction Banquet chairman for over three decades, knows that competent officials ensure fairly played games at all levels of sports. The Johnson Award for 2023 goes to Dave Kolstee from Jamestown.
The Stan Marshaus Legacy Award will be given in honor of the 2006 CSHOF inductee who has been a well-known figure in the world of golf in the county, especially with his achievements as pro and/or director of golf at the Chautauqua Golf Club. The Marshaus Award will be given to a top male high school golfer in Chautauqua County, Griffin Bogdanowicz from Southwestern Central School.
