In the biggest moments of the biggest games, Haleigh Dellow was unfazed.
Check that.
Most of Westfield’s games didn’t even seem to be “big games” because of Dellow’s talent.
A lot of times, the Wolverines’ opponents were facing an uphill battle before they even got off the bus.
Westfield’s ace right-hander was that good.
And after capping her career with another dominant season in the circle and at the plate, the George Mason University-bound Dellow is the Post-Journal/OBSERVER Girls Softball Player of the Year for an unprecedented third straight year.
In 22 games this season, Dellow went 18-2 with eight shutouts and three no-hitters. She pitched to a minuscule 0.65 earned run average, allowing just 11 earned runs in 118 innings pitched.
Dellow struck out 213 batters and held opposing batters to a .109 average.
But what separated Dellow from standout pitchers like Fredonia’s Jordan Lucas, Gowanda’s Addison Kota, Silver Creek’s Kaylee Hutchison, Chautauqua Lake’s Olivia Herrington and Randolph’s Kendall Steward was her offense.
In 84 plate appearances and 75 at-bats, Dellow hit .547 with 14 doubles, a triple and six home runs, while driving in 28 runs and scoring 40. She struck out just four times and was a perfect 22-for-22 in stolen-base attempts.
Dellow’s only two losses in the circle came against eventual New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class C champion Gowanda and to eventual state Class D runner-up Friendship/Scio.
Dellow had multiple hits in 13 of Westfield’s 22 games and was held hitless in just five. Against Panama, Maple Grove and Ellicottville, she turned in four-hit games and on five other occasions she pounded out three hits, including a four-game stretch of three-hit games in early May.
Twice, Dellow outdueled Herrington, a Canisius College commit herself. On May 9, Dellow went 3 for 3 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored as Westfield beat Chautauqua Lake 4-2. A week later, the Wolverines beat the Thunderbirds 5-3. In those two games, Dellow allowed six hits and struck out 26 while walking five. None of Chautauqua Lake’s five runs were earned as Westfield locked up the Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 West title for a second straight year with a combined 23-1 record over both seasons.
In the postseason, Dellow went 4 for 4 with three doubles, a home run, three RBIs and four runs scored in a Section VI Class D quarterfinal win over Maple Grove; 4 for 6 with two doubles, a home run, two RBIs and three runs scored in a sectional semifinal victory over Ellicottville; and 2 for 3 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored as the Wolverines beat Clymer/Sherman 4-0 for their second straight Class D title at Allegany-Limestone Central School on June 30.
In the Far West Regional against Friendship/Scio, Dellow had the lone hit off Nevaeh Ross in a 3-0 loss. In that game, Dellow turned in another fine performance in the circle with a three-hitter that included nine strikeouts and no walks.
Dellow, the 2021 league Pitcher of the Year and two-time league Player of the Year, capped her senior season by being named to the New York State Sportswriters and Coaches Organization for Girls Sports all-state team for a third time.
Now, she’ll go down in Post-Journal/OBSERVER history with the newspaper’s top honor for a third time.
