FREWSBURG — On Tuesday, Richard Dudzic passed away at the age of 80.

Dick was a longtime coach, parent, grandparent and overall fan of Fredonia Little Leaguers.

So on Wednesday evening, this year’s 10-12 Fredonia all-stars honored Dudzic the only way they knew how.

The won a championship for him.

Logan Simpson hit a two-run home run and pitched 4 2/3 innings of three-run relief as Fredonia beat Falconer 9-7 for the District 38 Little League 10-12 All-Stars title at Willis Hale Town Park.

A five-run bottom of the second inning capped a wild first two innings that saw the teams combine for 13 runs and end with Fredonia leading 9-4. Jack Hazelton led off the frame with a single to right field and Ethan Beach reached on a sacrifice bunt that saw Hazelton end up on third after an error. After a stolen base and a strikeout, Hazelton gave Fredonia a 5-4 lead when he scored on a wild pitch. Dominic Kubacki followed with an RBI groundout.

James Oakes started another rally when he singled and he moved to second on a wild pitch before Simpson hit a long home run over the center-field fence. Fredonia wasn’t done. Kaison Malkowski followed the home run with a walk, went to second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a passed ball and scored Fredonia’s fifth run of the inning on a wild pitch.

The lead would hold up for Simpson on the mound. The right-hander came on with two outs in the first inning after Falconer took a 4-0 lead and got out of the inning with a strikeout. He then struck out the side in the second inning to give his team time to take the lead.

Falconer made it 9-6 in the top of the third inning. AJ Stewart reached on catcher’s interference to open the frame before Colton Rhinehart hit an RBI triple that got to the fence in left field after a bad hop. Colton Smith then reached on a dropped third strike that allowed Rhinehart to score, and Smith ended up at third base on the play with no outs. But Simpson buckled down, striking out the next two batters before a grounder to second got Fredonia out of the inning.

Falconer got a run closer in the top of the fourth inning. Caden Raynor walked with one out, went to second on a two-out wild pitch, and scored on Brody Taylor’s RBI single.

Neither team scored in the fifth and Simpson got the first out of the sixth inning with a strikeout before reaching his pitch threshold for the game. Fredonia turned to Jaxon Bolton in relief and the right-hander ended the game with a groundout to second base and a pop fly in the middle of the infield that Simpson caught for the final out.

Fredonia celebrated on the infield and then posed for the obligatory team photos as the sun set in Frewsburg.

Before Fredonia left the park, Simpson gave his home run ball to Beach.

The Fredonia No. 9 hitter, Ethan just happens to be Dudzic’s grandson.

NOTES: Falconer scored four runs in the top of the first inning without the benefit of a hit. Taylor and Stewart walked and scored runs, Smith reached on a dropped third strike and scored, and Ethan Dickerson was hit by a pitch and scored. … Fredonia’s four runs in the bottom of the first inning were thanks to an Oakes single and two Falconer errors. Kubacki reached on an error and scored, Oakes singled and scored, Simpson walked and scored, and Nathan Kelly reached on an error and scored.
