Wintersteen 49th After 1st Round In Rexford

REXFORD — A pair of local girls finished in the middle of the pack after the opening round of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Girls Golf Championships at The Edison Club on Sunday.

Cassadaga Valley’s Jocelyn Wintersteen finished tied for 49th with a 20-over 92.

Wintersteen went out in 8-over 44 with bogeys at Nos. 3, 4, 7 and 8 as well as pars at Nos. 2, 6 and 9. She came in with a 12-over 48 that included bogeys at Nos. 10 and 17 as well as pars at Nos. 11, 13 and 14.

“Jocelyn played very solid throughout the day. She got into some trouble toward the end of her round, but was able to salvage a respectable score,” Cassadaga Valley coach Jenny Ringler said. “I’m very proud of her accomplishments playing at this level as an eighth-grader, and I know good things are to come in (today’s) round.”

Fredonia’s Juli Spacciapolli tied for 57th with a 22-over 94.

Spacciapolli went out with a 12-over 48 that included a par at No. 2 as well as bogeys at Nos. 3, 6, 7 and 8. She finished her back nine with a 10-over 46 that included a par at No. 16 to go along with bogeys at Nos. 11, 12, 13, 14, 17 and 18.

“I was very pleased with the way Juli played the entire round. She stayed focused. She made great choices even when shots didn’t go her way,” Fredonia coach Alex Conti said. “She maintained a positive attitude so it was a terrific round. We’re very excited to see how (today’s) round goes.”

Jamestown’s Nilla Ecklof is 91st after shooting an opening-round 108 to finish 36-over par.

Ecklof made four bogeys on the front nine and one on the back nine. The highlight of her day was a par at No. 14.

“Today wasn’t Nilla’s day. She caught some tough breaks and struggled getting the ball out of the rough,” Jamestown coach Joe Salvaggio said. “I am so impressed with how she maintained a positive attitude and was 100% committed to every shot throughout the entire round. She has all the tools to compete at this level and I am confident she will play well in the final round.”
