ELMIRA — A pair of local student-athletes struggled to stay in contention at the opening day of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Boys Golf Championships at the Mark Twain Golf Course on Sunday.

Southwestern’s Griffin Bogdanowicz is tied for 72nd after shooting 14-over 86.

Bogdanowicz had a rough start to his round, bogeying Nos. 1 and 2 before a birdie at No. 3 left him at 1-over. Bogdanowicz then answered a double-bogey at No. 4 with the highlight of his round when he eagled the par-5, 558-yard No. 5. But the good fortune did not continue as he finished the front nine with a double-bogey and two more bogeys before a par at No. 9 to go out in 5-over 41.

On the back nine, Bogdanowicz made a triple-bogey 7 at No. 10 before playing the next six holes at 7-over. He capped his round with a birdie at No. 17 and a par at No. 18 to come in at 45.

Fredonia’s Ryan Kelly is tied for 75th after shooting 15-over 87.

Kelly was just 1-over through three holes before a double-bogey at No. 4 and a bogey at No. 5. The 395-yard No. 6 was the highlight of Kelly’s round as he converted a birdie to get back to 3-over for the round, but a double-bogey at No. 7 and a triple-bogey at No. 9 gave Kelly a 45 over his first nine.

On the back nine, Kelly made bogey on the first three holes before back-to-back pars at Nos. 13 and 14. A double-bogey at No. 15 and a bogey at No. 16 preceded two pars to finish his round with a back-nine score of 42.

Grady Glennon of Section IV Hunter-Tannersville shot even-par 72 to lead the field by a stroke heading into today’s final round.

Section IV Union-Endicott’s Dante Bertoni and Section V Bishop Kearney’s Danny Whele are tied for second at 1-over 73, while Lewiston-Porter’s Rocco Randazzo is tied with Section V Pittsford Sutherland’s Owen Corby for fourth at 2-over 74.

Other Section VI golfers include: Williamsville East’s Tyler Delisanti, who is tied for 26th at 9-over 81; Iroquois’ Adam Cichowski and Frontier’s Alex Schickling, who are tied for 33rd at 10-over 82; Orchard Park’s Enzo Clerici, who is tied for 45th at 11-over 83; Medina’s Aidan Paul, who is tied for 60th at 13-over 85; and Clarence’s David Brooks, who is tied for 83rd at 16-over 88.

Section V is currently lowest-scoring section at 35-over 539, followed by Section IV (50-over, 554), Section I (56-over, 560), Section XI (64-over, 568), Section II (66-over, 570), Section VIII (68-over, 572), Section VI (69-over, 573), Sectio III (70-over, 574), Section X (74-over, 578), Section IX (83-over, 587) and Section VII (123-over, 627).

Today’s final round will begin at 7:30 a.m.
