Southwestern’s sailing team competed in the New York state championships this past weekend.

The competition was hosted by the Chautauqua Lake Community Sailing Foundation, in conjunction with the Chautauqua Lake Yacht Club.

The two-day event began with a steady breeze around 15 knots with gusts over 20 knots. Rainstorms delayed the start time until after 1 p.m. on Saturday. The winds continued as teams made their way out on the water once the rainstorms had passed. Sixteen races were completed by the end of the day.

Sunday gave the competitors a welcome relief from the rain with sunny skies and continuous moderate winds from the northwest at 8 to 10 knots. Sixteen more races were completed by 1 p.m.

Sailing for Southwestern No. 1 were Nolan Lefler, Philipp Meyer, Matt Lefler, Siri DuBois, Aiden Dearman, Tristan Taylor and Annika Hedin.

Sailing for Southwestern No. 2 were Jack Colburn and Ava Patti in the A Division and Jack Ballard and Caroline Churchill in the B Division.

Southwestern No. 1 took third place overall with Stony Brook School of Long Island in first and St. Joe’s Collegiate Institute of Buffalo in second. Nichols School was fourth and Southwestern No. 2 took fifth.

Competition for second through fourth places was incredibly close with only a couple of points separating the teams over many races.

This event capped the spring season for the sailors.

Southwestern is always looking to add sailors to the team. The Chautauqua Lake Community Sailing Foundation hosts spring and summer programs. Regattas will start back up in early September for the fall season.
