WESTFIELD — Slow starts are becoming a thing of the past for Westfield’s softball team.
Two days after scoring eight runs in the first two innings of a 13-2 win over Maple Grove, the top-seeded Wolverines scored eight runs in the first inning alone and beat No. 4 Ellicottville 16-0 in a Section VI Class D semifinal at Westfield Academy & Central School.
“Earlier in the season, we weren’t getting our sticks on early in the game,” Westfield head coach Shawn Gnadzinski said. “I asked them to jump on them early and try to win every inning from there on out. They delivered and I’m proud of them.”
In her final home game, senior Haleigh Dellow went 4 for 6 with a home run, two doubles, three RBIs and three runs scored, while also throwing a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts in the circle.
“Haleigh is special, we all know that. She’s been doing it for a long time, it’s not a surprise anymore,” Gnadzinski said. “For her to play her last game here at home, have a home run and pitch the way she did … super kid and she deserves it. She works hard.”

Mackenzie Schumaker was 4 for 5 with a double, two RBIs and three runs scored; Sydney Hotchkiss was 4 for 5 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored; and Tanleigh Bestine was 3 for 4 with a double and two runs scored for the Wolverines, who pounded out 25 total hits.
Dellow led off the game with a single off the Ellicottville third baseman’s glove and stole second before scoring on Eva Gnadzinski’s RBI single as Westfield led 1-0 in the blink of an eye. Bestine followed with a single and stole second before Schumaker hit a two-run double. Madyson Burgess was then hit by a pitch and the Eagles turned to Ande Northrup in relief of starting pitcher Keelin Finn before they had recorded an out.
After a pop-up to the catcher, Brynn Ernewein reached on a bunt single and Keara Kincaid hit a two-run double down the left-field line. Another run scored on an error before Dellow hit a two-run double to make it 8-0.
The Wolverines added three runs in the third inning on an RBI double by Gnadzinski and a two-run single from Burgess.
Dellow connected on the final home run of her home career in the fourth inning and freshman Arielle Corbett’s first career hit went for an RBI single in the fifth.

Sydney Hotchkiss joined the party with a two-run single and Kincaid added an RBI single in the sixth to close out the scoring.
“I told them, how we’re going to finish is how we’re going to go into the next round,” Coach Gnadzinski said. ” … I wanted them to keep pounding and go into the next game on a high.”
While Dellow did put down 11 Ellicottville batters via strikeouts, the Wolverines got the other 10 outs with flawless defense in the field, something that will be required as they go deeper into the postseason.
“We pride ourselves on playing defense. If they don’t score, we’ll figure out a way because we’re pesky,” Gnadzinski said. “They’ve answered the bell every single time.”
Next up for Westfield is a 5 p.m. sectional final tilt against No. 6 Clymer/Sherman on Tuesday at Gowanda High School. The Wolverines beat the Wolves 10-0 and 13-0 in two meetings this season.

“I think that our division is strong. I hope we see Clymer/Sherman,” Gnadzinski said before learning the Wolves’ result. ” … We’d like to see them do well as well.”
