Gowanda Earns Split With Fredonia
FREDONIA — Gowanda took the lead for good with a four-run second inning en route to a 9-5 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 baseball victory over Fredonia on Friday.
Madden Lay and Brayden Smith each singled before Blake Herman gave the Panthers a 4-3 lead with a two-run double in the top of the second inning. John Ondus, Tyler Smith and Cole Herman then hit consecutive singles to make it 6-3.
Gowanda put the game away with a three-run third inning. Drew Shull and Blake Herman walked before Alex Pachucinski hit a two-out, two-run double to right field. Pachucinski came all the way around to score on the play after the Hillbillies (1-1, 1-1) committed a throwing error.
Blake Herman finished 3 for 4 with a double, a triple, three runs scored and two RBIs; Ondus had two hits, including a double, and two runs scored; Tyler Smith had two hits; and Cole Herman drove in two runs.
Micah Davis reached on an infield single and Nathan Sercu was hit by a pitch before Owen Rush’s two-run double in the first inning for Fredonia. Ashton Putney then singled before Matt Cowan’s sacrifice fly gave the hosts a 3-2 lead. Rush also drove in a run with a single in the second inning, while Sercu walked with the bases loaded to force in Andrew Cowan in the third inning.
Rush had two hits, including a double, and three RBIs; Sercu scored twice; and Colin Crowell doubled for the Hillbillies.
Carter Capozzi threw the final four innings, striking out five with no walks to earn the win on the mound for Gowanda (1-1, 1-1).
HENDRIX POWERS TROJANS
JAMESTOWN — Dustin Hendrix allowed one run and two hits over five innings while striking out four as Southwestern beat Jamestown 11-1 in six innings of Division 1 play at the Martin Road Athletic Complex.
Hendrix also led the Trojans (1-1, 1-1) at the plate with a pair of doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored. Cameron Lemk also had two hits, including a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Lucas Gilbert and Chase Kartesz each had a pair of hits. Both scored a pair of runs while Kartesz also drove in two runs.
Southwestern led 4-0 after two innings and 6-1 after three before three more runs in the fourth and two in the sixth.
Xavier Foust and Caleb Piazza each singled for the Red Raiders (1-1, 1-1). Colin Melendez and Antonie Rodriguez combined for five strikeouts and walked five.
BULLDOGS HOLD ON LATE
MAYVILLE — Brocton went up 8-1 with a six-run second inning and held on for a 9-8 Division 2 victory over Chautauqua Lake that was called due to darkness in the bottom of the seventh inning.
In the second, the Bulldogs (2-1, 1-1) walked three times and were hit by two pitches while also benefiting from a Chautauqua Lake error. Grant Gustafson singled for the lone hit of the frame.
Aiden Gatto doubled twice and scored three times, while Kadin Ehmke doubled at the plate and struck out five on the mound for Brocton.
Brad Smith relieved in the second inning and allowed just one run over the final four-plus innings for the Thunderbirds (1-2, 1-1).
Nate Henry singled twice and scored a run; Cayden Blackman had two hits, including a double; and Lawson Ormsby doubled for Chautauqua Lake.
BLACK KNIGHTS WIN AGAIN
SILVER CREEK — No comeback was necessary for Silver Creek/Forestville this time.
Twenty-four hours after rallying for a win over Chautauqua Lake for Coach Mike Janisch’s 500th career victory, the Black Knights needed just five innings Friday to upend Cattaraugus Little Valley 11-1 in East Division play.
John Steinwachs allowed a fourth-inning single, struck out seven and walked one and Kam Sakpal smacked two hits and drove in a run to highlight Silver Creek/Forestville’s victory. Matt Woleben added a double.
The win raised the Black Knights to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the division, while the Timberwolves fell to 0-2 and 0-2.
EAGLES RALLY PAST RANDOLPH
RANDOLPH — Gian Nuzzo went 2 for 3 with a triple, three runs scored and two RBIs to lead Ellicottville past Randolph 12-4 in Division 3 play.
Caedon Wyatt went 2 for 3 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI; and Hunter Smith had two hits, two RBIs and two runs scored for the Eagles (1-3, 1-1), who trailed 3-1 before scoring 11 runs over the final four innings.
David Malone had two hits, an RBI and a run scored; Michael Bohall had two hits; and Conner Brayley doubled, scored a run and drove in a run for the Cardinals (0-4, 0-2).
Caedon Wyatt earned the win, throwing five innings and allowing two earned runs while striking out seven. Cameron Mendell threw the final two innings of shutout, no-hit ball, striking out two.
WOLFPACK WIN IN SIXTH
CLYMER — Clymer/Sherman/Panama scored the final eight runs of the game, including three in the bottom of the sixth inning, to beat Maple Grove 8-5 in Division 2 action.
Tate Catanese earned the win on the mound for the Wolfpack (3-0, 2-0), tossing a pair of shutout innings while allowing one hit and striking out two. Gabe Roth threw the opening five innings, allowing five runs (two earned), in the first inning before shutting out the Red Dragons for four innings. The right-hander allowed five hits and struck out five while walking two.
Trent Burchanowski and Catanese doubled while Dylan Michael tripled for Clymer/Sherman/Panama. Catanese drove in four runs.
Kolden McCall struck out five in five innings before Adam Brisky threw the final inning for Maple Grove (3-1, 1-1).
Colin McPherson had two hits, including a double, and Nash Luther also had two hits for the Red Dragons.
