Big Sixth Inning Sends Fredonia Past Allegany-Limestone
ALLEGANY — Poise with the bases loaded seemed to be the theme in the Fredonia baseball team’s 6-3 victory over Allegany-Limestone in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 action Wednesday.
With the score tied at 3-3 in the top of the sixth inning, Fredonia (2-1, 2-1) loaded the bases with Ashton Putney, Matt Cash and Matt Cowan. Both Andrew Cowan and Collin Crowell worked walks to drive in Putney and Cash for a 5-3 lead. Fredonia then tacked on a final run in the seventh when Matt Cowan drove in Owen Rush with a RBI groundout with the bases loaded to make it 6-3.
Prior to scoring clutch late runs with the bases loaded, Fredonia twice turned double plays to get out of bases-loaded jams. In the bottom of the third, the Hillbillies prevented more runs by turning a 4-6-3 double play from Putney to Nathan Sercu to Matt Cowan. Then, in the bottom of the fifth, Fredonia prevented more Olean runs with another 4-6-3 double play to escape with the game tied at 3-3.
Rush started on the mound and went 4 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts, four walks and two earned runs in the no-decision. Cash finished the game on the hill, striking out three and walking one for the win.
Micah Davis highlighted the day at the plate with two hits, including a double, Crowell drove in two runs and Putney scored twice.
Allegany-Limestone (1-4, 0-3) was led on offense by Andrew Giardini with three singles and Sean Conroy had a pair of hits.
PANTHERS ROLL HUSKIES
GOWANDA — Gowanda picked up another five-inning win over Olean, this time cruising to a 14-4 victory in a Division 1 game.
Alex Pachucinski shined on the hill for Gowanda (3-1, 3-1), throwing four innings with eight strikeouts and then went 2 for 3 with two RBIs at the plate.
Joining in on the fun offensively were Tyler Smith with two hits and four RBIs; John Ondus with three hits, including a double, and two RBIs; Blake Herman with two hits; and Cole Herman with two RBIs.
Olean (2-4, 2-2) was led by Caine DeGolier with an RBI single. Lucas Brushingham was the losing pitcher.
EBERSOLE STARS FOR EAGLES
FRANKLINVILLE — Derek Ebersole struck out 10 and gave up just two hits to lead North Collins past Franklinville 9-1 in Division 3 action.
Ebersole also added two hits at the plate, Austin Kehr stroked two singles and collected two RBIs, and Matt Warsaw chipped in two hits for North Collins (4-1, 2-1).
Franklinville’s (0-3, 0-2) offense came from a Collin Mooney RBI single and Matthew Spittler added the other hit.
JAMESTOWN PREVAILS
FALCONER — Jamestown used a six-run third inning and a seven-run sixth en route to a 17-4 victory over Falconer in a Division 1 game.
Antonie Rodriguez and Owen Glover combined for seven strikeouts and one walk in six innings.
Leading the way offensively for the Red Raiders was Caleb Piazza, who collected a pair of hits, including a double, and drove in five runs. Sean O’Brien (three RBIs) and Mike Boron both had two hits, and John Torres Jr., Brandon Lobb and Colin Melendez each added a double for Jamestown (2-5, 2-1).
Brodie Little had two hits for the Golden Falcons.
T’BIRDS’ HEWES PITCHES GEM
SINCLAIRVILLE — Devin Hewes tossed a four-hitter and struck out 12 in 6 1/3 innings to lead Chautauqua Lake to an 8-2 victory over Cassadaga Valley in a Division 2 game.
Hewes helped his own cause with three hits; Nolan Olson also had three, and Lawson Ormsby chipped in two for the Thunderbirds (2-2, 2-1).
Jerry Jones had an RBI single for the Cougars (0-4, 0-3), while teammates Braden Lebaron, Bradley Windnagle and Calvin Hilliker each had a single.
Lebaron struck out eight on the mound.
ROSS SHINES FOR WARRIORS
ELLICOTTVILLE — Jaxson Ross and Zaron Tucker did a little bit of everything for Salamanca in its 14-7 Division 3 victory over Ellicottville.
On the mound Ross worked 3 1/3 innings, struck out 11 and walked four, before giving way to Tucker, who fanned six and didn’t issue a walk. Offensively, Ross collected a pair of hits, including a triple, and drove in a pair of runs, and Tucker added two hits and two RBIs.
The win raised Salamanca’s record to 5-2 overall and 4-0 in the division.
Hunter Smith belted a pair of triples and drove in a run, Braylon Wyatt belted a double and drove in two runs, and Caedon Wyatt plated a pair for the Eagles (1-4, 1-2).
HAGLUND TOSSES 1-HITTER
FREWSBURG — Chase Haglund threw a five-inning one-hitter with two strikeouts as Frewsburg shut out Maple Grove 10-0 in Division 2 play.
The Bears (5-2, 3-0) scored three runs in the third inning, six in the fourth and one in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.
Haglund went 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs scored; Harrison Eckert tripled and scored a run; Garrett Brink singled, drove in two runs and scored a run; and Payton Dustin singled twice and drove in two runs.
Nash Luther singled to lead off the game for the Red Dragons (3-2, 1-2).
OBERGFELL POWERS PORTVILLE
PORTVILLE — Ethan Obergfell went 2 for 4 with three RBIs, including a two-run home run to break a 1-1 fifth-inning tie, as Portville beat Silver Creek/Forestville 3-1 in Division 3 play.
Luke Petryszak threw five innings of one-run, one-hit ball while striking out 12 and walking two for the Panthers (2-0, 2-0). Karsen Padlo threw the final two innings and struck out two while allowing one hit and one walk.
Aiden Piccolo pitched into the fifth inning, allowing three runs on three hits while striking out nine and walking four for the Black Knights (3-3, 2-1). John Steinwachs threw two innings, allowing a hit and a walk.
Ryan Michalek had a fourth-inning single and Kam Sakpal had a seventh-inning single for Silver Creek/Forestville, which had two runners on in the seventh when the final out was made.
