Jayhawks Open Softball Season With Two Losses

CANANDAIGUA — Opening up the 2023 season, the Jamestown Community College softball team dropped a pair of games to host Finger Lakes CC on Sunday afternoon.

The Jayhawks (0-2, 0-2 Region 3) lost Game 1 16-8 and then fell 14-4 in Game 2.

Jamestown CC was led offensively by catcher Sydney Dahl (South Dayton/Pine Valley CS), who went 2 for 3, including a triple, and drove in four runs in Game 1. Pitcher Jamaladie Pacheco (Dunkirk/Dunkirk HS) also collected two hits with center fielder Angelique Palacio (Tucson, Ariz./Desert View HS) hitting a triple.

Palacio got the scoring going for the Jayhawks in the first with a triple. Savanna Krystofiak (Brocton/Brocton CS) then walked and Palacio scored on a double steal with Krystofiak. Dahl brought in Krystofiak with a single as Jamestown CC took an early 2-0 lead.

After four runs scored by the Lakers in the bottom of the first, the Jayhawks added another run in the second inning as left fielder Cheznea Rivera (Franklinville/Franklinville HS) scored on an error by Finger Lakes CC to make it 4-3.

Finger Lakes CC added six runs in the bottom of the third to make it 10-3. In the top of the fourth inning, the Jayhawks made a rally by scoring five runs. During the five-run explosion, Dahl hit a bases-clearing triple to drive home Palacio, Pacheco and shortstop Desiree Nelson (Window Rock, Ariz./Window Rock HS). Dahl later stole home to cap off the run to make it 10-8.

The Lakers added five insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth to secure the win.

Jamestown CC took advantage on the bases, collecting 10 stolen bases as a team with Dahl, Rivera, and third baseman Jena Vacanti (Brocton/Brocton CS) leading the way with two stolen bases apiece.

Pacheco took the loss in the circle for the Jayhawks.

In Game 2 of the doubleheader, Jamestown CC was led by Nelson with a pair of hits and an RBI, while Palacio added another RBI.

After falling behind 5-0 in the opening inning, the Jayhawks got on the board with a single from Palacio to score Pacheco. Nelson drove in Dahl on a single to make it 5-3.

After a scoreless second inning, the Lakers added three runs in the third. Jamestown CC added its final run of the game in the bottom of the third with a home run by Palacio.

Pacheco took the loss in the circle where she surrendered 11 earned runs while striking out a pair of batters.

The Jayhawks will be back in action on Tuesday, April 4, as they travel to Genesee CC for a 3 p.m. doubleheader start.
