MATTYDALE — Abbie Derby was not the least bit intimidated when she arrived at Strike N Spare in suburban Syracuse early Saturday morning.
It showed in her performance.
Bowling in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association girls bowling championship, the Jamestown High School junior was a member of the Section VI composite team that claimed the title by one pin, totaling 6,284 for six games compared to 6,283 for Section XI.
Individually, Derby’s 211 average placed her seventh. Her high game was 247 to go along with a 200, a 190, a 214, a 200 and a 215 for a total of 1,266.
“Abbie gave an absolutely wonderful performance,” JHS bowling coach Peggy Harris said. “She was very consistent throughout all six games. She really kept her head in the game. She stayed very, very focused. The girls all worked together as a team, encouraging each other and supporting each other. It was really an awesome experience, it really was.”

There were a few anxious moments as the day wore on.
“The last couple games they started losing the big lead they had,” Harris said.
But in the end, Section VI prevailed.
“It was a great experience,” Harris said. “A lot of (happy) tears when this went down. It’s quite an accomplishment for all of them. It was a very emotional day.”
Other members of the team were Kaelynn Weber of Kenmore, Brenna Forsha of Tonawanda, Sarah Zulick of Clarence, Jillian Yarnes of Oarchard Park and Hailee Zalwsky of Allegany Limestone. Weber placed fourth with a 218.5 average and Forsha was 10th with a 208.2 and a high game of 266, which was the second-best game of the tournament.
