Randolph won four Section VI titles in nine years prior to this season, but the Cardinals haven’t played in a Far West Regional since 2009.
That’ll change next Saturday.
Senior Carson Conley scored 24 points and fellow senior Jaiden Huntington added 21 as No. 1 Randolph beat No. 3 Frewsburg 70-47 in the Section VI Class C championship game Friday night at Jamestown Community College’s Physical Education Complex.
“This year, it means so much more because we are the guys running the show,” Conley said postgame. “To do this with the guys that I love and who I’ve been playing with since third grade is an awesome experience.”
The victory, the Cardinals’ 12th crown since 1946, vaults Coach Kevin Hind’s team into next weekend’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class C Far West Regional against a Section V representative yet to be determined.

“There were no ifs, ands or buts about it. From day one, with Salamanca (moving up to Class B) and no Buffalo schools standing in the way, there’s been more pressure,” Hind said. ” … It’s been weighing on me. These guys were locked in. We put some new stuff in, they executed and they worked really well. They were awesome.”
The Rochester area will determine its champions in the coming days. On Sunday at Blue Cross Arena, Wheatland-Chili will take on Lyons at 11 a.m. for the C3 title, York will take on Pembroke at 1 p.m. for the C2 championship and Northstar Christian will play Avon at 3 p.m. for the C1 crown. Those three winners will then face off Monday and Wednesday to determine the overall Class C winner.
“There are six really good teams left over in Section V,” Hind said, “the good thing is we can only play one of them.”
Any of the three will be a worthy opponent for Randolph, which went undefeated against Section VI Class C competition this season. The Cardinals’ only Class C loss of the year came against York back on Jan. 14.
Randolph jumped on top of Frewsburg quickly Friday as sophomore Drew Hind’s 3-pointer made it 7-4 and gave the Cardinals a lead they would never relinquish.

The triple started a 10-0 run that was capped by a Huntington 3-pointer.
“Our goal going in was to get Jaiden the ball inside. We wanted to take it at them right off the bat. Our first five plays on the board in the locker room are set plays to get him touches inside,” Hind said. “I thought he did a great job. He did a good job of attacking them off the dribble and in the post.”
Armed with a seven-point lead, Huntington hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer that made it 19-9 after eight minutes and gave him 12 points for the period.
“That was huge, especially because we screwed up the defensive rotation. If they hit a contested shot with great defense, good for them,” Frewsburg head coach Rob Collver said. ” … To make that mistake on defense and miss the rotation, and then have them beat you on it, that’s even worse.”
The Bears would never recover. They turned it over five times in the first quarter and 13 times in the game. Randolph turned those extra possessions into 15 points at the other end of the floor.

“I didn’t feel our nerves or anxiety got the better of us, but we’re a team that wants to push the action and pressure the other team. I think that kind of bit us in the butt a little bit in that first quarter,” Collver said. “Randolph’s good, they have long reaches and they’re tall. We can’t simulate that length and speed at the same time.”
A 12-2 Cardinals run midway through the second quarter made it 40-19 before Frewsburg’s Zack Carr hit a 3-pointer to stem the tide, but Conley converted a three-point play and Hind scored before the quarter was over as Randolph led 45-25 at halftime. Conley had 16 points in the second quarter alone.
“I told Carson that he had to prove himself as one of the best players,” Hind said.
Carr hit a 3-pointer on the Bears’ first possession of the third quarter, but a free throw from Huntington and a bucket from sophomore Griffin Nelson pushed the Cardinals’ lead back up to 20. Frewsburg never got closer than 19 the rest of the way.
“I have three guys on this team that can shoot as well as any three guys I’ve ever had,” Hind said. “A lot of times there are just not enough shots for all of them. Find the hot hand, see who’s hitting shots and try to call plays to get those guys going.”
Randolph held Bears’ leading scorer Gavin Smith to 10 points and zero field goals in the game.
“He was the focal point of their defense. We knew that coming in. They were physical with him, they had different people on him a lot of times … and they just kind of mixed up their defensive looks,” Collver said. “We wanted to attack some of their weaknesses in their defense, and they did a good job of countering our offensive attack.”
“We wanted to take him away,” Conley said. “The goal was for him to not score any points.”
Randolph’s last four sectional titles came in Class C2, but each time the Cardinals lost the overall Class C crossover game, three times to Middle Early College and once to Chautauqua Lake.
“When you think back to last year … and the disappointment that we had after that loss (to Salamanca) here, we just wanted to get back here,” Conley said. “We knew we had the team to do it. That was definitely the goal.”
