Cecil Sweeps Doubleheader From JCC
NORTH EAST, Md. — In their second doubleheader against Cecil College, Jamestown Community College dropped Game 1 by a score of 11-10 and the second game by a score of 6-5 on Sunday afternoon.
In Game 1, the Jayhawks were led offensively by sophomore catcher Wyatt Hennessy (Mukwonago, Wis./Mukwonago HS), who was hot at the plate, going 4 for 5 with a double and a home run while driving in five runners. Freshman outfielder Timothy Johnson (San Tan Valley, Ariz./Comb HS) went 3 for 5 including a pair of doubles.
Timothy Johnson got the scoring going early, hitting a double to center field to bring in sophomore shortstop Nate Johnson (Lakewood/Southwestern CS). Hennessy drove in Timothy Johnson in the next at-bat with a single to center field. Freshman outfielder Hayden Hoag (Salamanca/Salamanca CS) capped off the scoring with a double of his own to bring home Hennessy. The Seahawks scored a run at the bottom of the first to make it 3-1.
In the top of the second inning, Jamestown CC continued its hot at-bats as Timothy Johnson hit his second double of the game, driving home second baseman Riley Piazza (Jamestown/Jamestown HS). Hennessy would then drive home Timothy Johnson with a double to center field, making it 5-1. Hennessy would score the final run of the inning by virtue of a wild pitch.
Cecil would gain the lead in the bottom of the second, scoring six runs to make it 7-6.
After an inning of scoreless action, the Seahawks added four more runs in the fourth inning to make it 11-6.
The Jayhawks showed fight with first baseman freshman Royce Frazier (Easton, Pa./Notre Dame-East Stroudsburg HS) hitting a sacrifice fly to drive home freshman third baseman Lucas Marsh (Salamanca/Ellicottville CS) in the fifth inning. Hennessy would add another run in the sixth, hitting a solo shot to right field to make it 11-8.
In the seventh, Hennessy hit a single to right-center field to drive home Frazier and Piazza.
Sophomore pitcher Walt Rybczynski (Hamburg/St. Francis HS) earned the loss on the mound, going three innings and surrendering seven runs while striking out three batters. Freshman pitcher De’Sean Rogers (Winter Haven, Fla./Winter Haven HS) went the rest of the way, giving up four runs and striking out a pair of batters.
The Jayhawks continued to hit the ball well in the back half of the day’s doubleheader with Timothy Johnson, Piazza and catcher Kameron Melendez (Jamestown/Jamestown HS) all going deep to help power the offense. Piazza went 2 for 2 with a double and a home run while Timothy Johnson went 2 for 4 with three RBIs.
Jamestown CC started out quick, scoring two runs in the first with Timothy Johnson’s two-run home run. The Jayhawks tacked on another run in the second inning with Melendez hitting a solo shot to left field.
Cecil took the lead in the third inning, scoring five runs to make it 5-3.
In the fourth inning, Piazza cut the deficit to one run with a home run to left field, making it 5-4. Timothy Johnson tied the game up in the fifth inning with a single that drove in Melendez to make it 5-5.
The Seahawks scored the winning run in the sixth to take the game.
Sophomore pitcher Zach Rohlin (Russell, Pa./Eisenhower HS) earned the loss on the mound, going five innings while surrendering five earned runs. Freshman pitcher Eddie Bartoli (Yorktown Heights/Yorktown HS) closed the game out, striking out one batter.
The Jayhawks will be back in action today as they travel to Westmoreland County CC for a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
