Kramer-Led JCC Women Take 2nd; Johnson, Men Third At Regionals
ROCHESTER — A pair of Jamestown Community College swimmers were named Region 3 Swimmer of the Year and Swimmer of the Meet after their performances this past weekend at the NJCAA Region 3 Swimming & Diving Championships, hosted by Monroe CC.
Madison Kramer (Falconer/Falconer CS) was honored for the women, while Maxim Johnson was the recipient of the men’s award for the Jayhawks.
The Jamestown CC women finished as the Region 3 runnerup with 476 points, while the men took third with 318 points.
Head coach Todd Conklin was also named the NJCAA Region 3 Women’s Swimming & Diving Coach of the Year for the team’s accomplishments.
To start off the final day, Jenna Fiebiger (Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa/Fourways HS) placed second in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 28.68. Fiebiger followed up that performance with a second-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 58.14. Stacey Blackler (Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa/Edenvale HS) was right behind Fiebiger with a third-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:03.17.
In the 200-yard backstroke, Jamestown CC took the top two spots with Kramer finishing first with a new school record of 2:15.52 and Hannah Eckert (Frewsburg/Frewsburg CS) finishing second with a time of 2:35.46.
Continuing the winning ways, Lindsey Spitz (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown HS) finished first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:43.95. Kylee Hennessy (Warren, Pa./Warren Area HS) also made the podium in the event, finishing fourth with a time of 3:22.55.
To round out the action, the relay team of Kramer, Blackler, Spitz and Fiebiger placed first in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:59.88.
For the men, Johnson placed first in the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 23.90, a new school and region record. Gavin Roux (East London, Eastern Cape, South Africa/Selborne College) made the podium, placing sixth in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:05.31, cutting 5 seconds off his previous personal best.
In the 200-yard backstroke, Joseph Keyser (Mayville/Chautauqua Lake CS) continued his strong weekend, placing fourth with a time of 2:35.04. In the 200-yard breaststroke, Steven Zentz placed fifth with a time of 2:46.27.
To cap off the swimming, the relay team of Zentz, Keyser, Johnson and Josh Carr (Wigan, England/Standish Community HS) placed second in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:44.30.
In the morning session Saturday, Kramer got things going for the Jayhawks in the 50-yard backstroke, finishing first with a time of 28.33 which set new school, regional and pool records. Eckert placed third in the event with a time of 32.15.
Kramer continued her strong performance in the 100-yard butterfly, placing first with a time of 1:02.08, a new school record. Fiebiger placed third in the event, setting a new personal best with a time of 1:07.47.
In the 200-yard freestyle, Blackler shaved nearly 5 seconds off her previous best time with a time of 2:17.92, which placed her second.
The 200-yard relay team of Kramer, Eckert, Blackler and Fiebiger placed first with a time of 1:48.37. The 400-yard medley relay team of Kramer, Fiebiger, Eckert and Spitz also placed first with a time of 4:28.10, a new school record.
In the evening session, the Jayhawks started out with a second-place finish by Blackler in the 100-yard individual with a time of 1:12.29. Hennessy set a new personal best in the event, finishing with a time of 1:22.14.
In the 100-yard backstroke, Kramer placed first with a new school-record time of 1:01.17 and Eckert placed second with a time of 1:10.93. In the 100-yard breaststroke, Spitz placed first with a time of 1:13.94 and Hennessy placed third with a time of 1:33.55. Fibiger rounded out the individual events by placing second in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:53.25.
To round out the evening, the team of Kramer, Spitz, Fiebiger and Eckert placed first in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:59.72, a new school record.
To pace the Jayhawks’ men Saturday in the morning session, Keyser placed second in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 28.81, a new school record. Johnson continued his strong freshman season, placing first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 53.45, and new school record as well. Zentz also performed well in the 200-yard freestyle, placing second with a time of 2:07.35.
The relay team of Johnson, Zentz, Keyser and Carr placed first in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:40.09. The same relay team came back in the 400-yard medley relay, placing first with a time of 4:20.04.
In the evening session, Zentz got Jamestown CC going with a second-place finish in the 100-yard individual medley with a time of 1:05.78. Keyser also placed second in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:05.28. In the 200-yard butterfly, Johnson finished first with a time of 2:01.61, a new school record.
On Friday, the Jayhawks’ women started the weekend strong as Spitz finished first in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 34.21. Hennessy also had a strong start, finishing third in the event with a time of 40.65.
To continue the momentum, Spitz finished second in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:31.90, dropping 11 seconds off her personal best. Blackler came in third in the event, finishing with a time of 2:39.53. In Eckert’s first event on the night, she placed second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 28.40.
The Jayhawks will now prepare for the 2023 NJCAA Swimming & Diving Championships that start March 1 at Erie CC’s Burt Flickinger Athletic Center in Buffalo.
