Joslyn, Hoose Claim State Titles In Albany; Watson 6th; Calimeri, Chase Take 7th; Trim 8th

ALBANY – Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer’s Jordan Joslyn is a state champion.

So is Southwestern’s Tavio Hoose.

Joslyn, the Thunderbirds’ 126-pound junior, beat Tioga’s Gianni Silvestri 6-4 in the finals of the Division II bracket at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championships at MVP Arena on Saturday night to become Chautauqua Lake’s first state champion since Bryce Rowe in 2008.

Hoose, the Trojans 172-pound freshman, beat Cold Spring Harbor’s Greyson Meak 5-4 in their championship match to become Southwestern’s first champion since Matt Mazgaj won back-to-back titles in 2003 and 2004.

Hoose earned an 8-4 decision over Section IV Norwich’s Mason Edwards during the 172-pound semifinals Saturday morning.

Joslyn beat Section IV Chenango Valley’s Trevor Cortright 2-0 in the 126-pound semifinals.

Southwestern freshman Carmine Calimeri guaranteed himself a podium finish with a 9-8 win over Section X Malone’s Tanner King in his first wrestleback of the day. Calimeri lost to Section XI Shoreham-Wading River’s Chris Colon 5-2, who he beat Friday by the same score. Calimeri went up 8-2 on Section V Canisteo-Greenwood’s Austin Hall before beating him 11-6 to capture seventh place.

Southwestern junior Kenji Walters saw his tournament end with a 9-1 loss to Section V Bolivar-Richburg’s Gary McDowell Jr. at 110 pounds.

Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer senior Martin Ohlsson saw his high school wrestling career come to an end with a 4-2 loss to Eagle Academy’s Cameron Mayfield in their 138-pound wrestleback.

Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer senior Trent Burchanowski also saw his high school career come to an end with an 11-1 loss to Section II Greenville’s Kieran Cullen at 145 pounds.

Falconer/Cassadaga Valley senior Austin Chase guaranteed himself a place finish with a 5-0 defeat of Section IV Lansing’s Owen Emmick at 145 pounds. Chase was later pinned by Section III Copenhagen’s Tavian Camper in 4:48 before beating Eagle Academy’s Vakramongo Dosso 5-0 for a seventh-place finish.

Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer junior John Watson guaranteed himself a podium finish with a 7-4 defeat of Section V Palmyra-Macedon’s Gage Burgess at 152 pounds. Watson then rallied in the final 20 seconds for a 7-3 win over Section III Camden’s Sean Seymore before getting pinned in 1:18 by Eagle Academy’s Devone Bogie. Section V Canisteo-Greenwood’s Beau Zeh pinned Watson in 1:46 as the Panama junior settled for sixth place.

Falconer/Cassadaga Valley senior Brodie Little saw his high school career come to an end when he was pinned by Section III Adirondack’s Raymond Hennessey in 2:08.

At 189 pounds, Maple Grove junior Matt Trim confirmed a podium finish with a pin of Section IV Oneonta’s Mateo Goodhue in 4:25. Trim then lost a 6-3 decision to Section III Dolgeville’s Jared Bilinski before losing a 6-2 decision to Section IV Oxford/Greene’s Hunter Page to finish in eighth place.

Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer’s Ison Shirley’s junior season came to an end with a 3-1 loss to Section IV Windsor’s Garrett Bidwell at 215 pounds.

Randolph’s Ryan Carpenter saw his high school career end when he was pinned by Section IV Waverly’s Kam Hills in 32 seconds at 285 pounds.
