ANGOLA — It was probably unrealistic last weekend when Ken Rowe said he wanted to take 13 of his wrestlers to Albany.
Settling for six isn’t too shabby.
A half-dozen Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer wrestlers are part of a group of 14 local student-athletes who qualified for the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Championships after Saturday’s Section VI Division II state qualifier at Lake Shore High School.
Chautauqua Lake’s Jordan Joslyn and Panama’s John Watson earned sectional titles, while Wesfield’s Martin Ohlsson, Clymer’s Trent Burchanowski, Westfield’s Mason Maring and Panama’s Ison Shirley earned second-place finishes to earn berths in the state tournament, which will be held Friday, Feb. 24 and Saturday, Feb. 25 at MVP Arena in Albany.
“I would’ve been frustrated had we not had that many,” Rowe said. “We had a chance to get more. A couple of other kids came really close. … To have a dozen kids in the top four in this tournament is not common.”

The six Thunderbirds will be joined by a trio of Southwestern wrestlers and a trio of Falconer/Cassadaga Valley wrestlers in addition to one apiece from Randolph and Maple Grove.
Kenji Walters, Carmine Calimeri and Tavio Hoose all won sectional titles and return trips to the state tournament for the Trojans.
“I absolutely expected all three of them to advance,” Southwestern head coach Johnny Vogan said.
The Golden Cougars will be sending Saturday’s 145-pound champion Austin Chase as well as second-place finishers Dylan Newman and Brodie Little.
“We were hoping for a couple more, but any time you can get three kids to the state tournament you have to be happy about that,” Falconer/Cassadaga Valley head coach Drew Wilcox said.

Randolph’s Ryan Carpenter will be visiting Albany for the second straight year after becoming the Cardinals’ first Section VI champion in wrestling since Bill Young in 1988.
“You always hope for this. You always work for this,” said Randolph’s Todd Conley, who has not had a sectional champion in 25 years of coaching. “It feels really good. It’s been a great journey at the school.”
Maple Grove’s Matt Trim won the 189-pound title after No. 1 seed Dalton Caldwell of Falconer/Cassadaga Valley was disqualified during skin check at the start of the morning.
Joslyn was arguably Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer’s most impressive champion, rolling through his 126-pound bracket with a pin in 1:41 over Royalton-Hartland’s Luke Fay in the quarterfinals and a 16-1 technical fall over Maryvale’s Cody Freyburger in the semifinals before another 16-1 technical fall in just one period of action against Lake Shore’s Blake Hageman.
“I genuinely feel if he just wrestles, he’s not beatable in his weight class,” Rowe said. ” … If he’s mentally squared away, he’s going to have a very good tournament.”

Watson put an exclamation point on his day when he pinned Royalton-Hartland’s Quinn Brown 3:34 into their 152-pound championship match.
“He’s wrestled so smart all year,” Rowe said. “To get that pin like he did in the finals was pretty awesome.”
Ohlsson advanced despite dropping a 4-0 decision to Pioneer’s Xander Kirsch in the 138-pound final.
“He’s capable. … Maybe he got a little comfortable,” Rowe said of Ohlsson, who broke the Westfield career wins record with his 150th Saturday. “He’s capable of placing in Albany.”
Maring lost a 4-3 decision to Trim in the final.
“Some people might say he’s a surprise, but he’s improved throughout the year,” Rowe said.
Burchanowski had to survive a “True 2nd” match at 145 pounds to return to the state tournament. The senior lost a 5-0 decision to Chase in the final before he went to the third period against Iroquois’ Brady Wilkinson tied 0-0 before earning a pin at the 3:55 mark of his second-place match.
“It impressed me that he did come back for that true second the way he did,” Rowe said. “He has two weeks now to heal and get his gas tank right.”
Shirley also survived a “True 2nd” match at 215 pounds. Iroquois’ Trevor Barry pinned Shirley in the final before the Thunderbirds junior pinned Pioneer’s Luke Matheis in the second-place match.
“If (Ison’s) head is on, he’s going to win,” Rowe said. ” … To get that stick with time running out was pretty awesome.”
Hoose was Southwestern’s first champion of the day with a 3-2 decision over Pioneer’s Brady Heckathorn in the 172-pound final.
“He wrestled a really smart match,” Vogan said. “Tavio is extremely focused right now on his goal, which is a state championship.”
Walters beat top-seeded Dominick Callara of Medina 5-3 in the 110-pound final.
“We addressed our strategy … and really frustrated Callara from his 3-point,” Vogan said. “I definitely thought it was (Walters’) best match he’s wrestled in the five years I’ve coached him. … Definitely a breakthrough match for him.”
Calimeri was hardly tested at 118 pounds where he finished with a 9-2 decision over Fredonia/Silver Creek’s Lucas Hoffman in the final.
“He totally dominated everybody this tournament,” Vogan said. “The sky is the limit for him. I don’t think he knows how good he can be yet.”
Chase’s win over Burchanowski in the 145-pound final made him the Golden Cougars’ lone champion.
“I thought he was one of the better wrestlers in the tournament, if not the best guy in the tournament,” Wilcox said. “His mentality is perfect right now. I’m looking for big things from him in two weeks.”
Wilson’s Jacob Stephenson — the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler — pinned Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Little in 3:55 at 160 pounds.
“Just because you beat a kid early in the year doesn’t mean you are going to beat him again,” Wilcox said. “He’ll learn from it. Luckily, he’s still making the trip.”
Newman dropped a 4-3 decision to Newfane’s Jakob Lucinski in the 102-pound final before picking up a 7-1 win over the Thunderbirds’ Gavin Burchanowski in the second-place match.
“Dylan was mentally into the match and really dominated from start to finish,” Wilcox said.
Carpenter earned a 7-2 decision over Wilson’s Hamza Merrick in the 285-pound final.
“We came up with a game plan. Ryan executed it perfectly,” Conley said. “We took more of a defensive approach on our feet. We were trying to stop (Merrick’s) offense. … Ryan could use his athleticism to wrestle him on the mat.”
Before beating Maring in the 189-pound final, Trim topped Medina’s Brody Fry and Fredonia/Silver Creek’s Dawson Russo.
