FALCONER — Dani Krenzer is the unquestioned leader of the Falconer girls basketball team.
On Tuesday, the Golden Falcons senior needed contributions from her teammates to advance in the Section VI playoffs.
Augustine Krenzer had 10 points, six rebounds and four steals; Dani Krenzer had 10 points and five steals; Autumn Lynn grabbed six rebounds; and Kamryn Harper had four steals as No. 7 Falconer beat No. 10 Fredonia 42-30 in a Section VI Class B2 prequarterfinal at Falconer High School.
“It was nice to have a home-court advantage,” Falconer head coach Emily Scholeno said. “We had a good few days of practice. The girls felt pretty confident coming in.”
Next up for the Golden Falcons is a 7 p.m. Friday quarterfinal date with No. 2 Olmsted. The Owls finished second in the Division I of the Buffalo City League after going 11-3 in the league and 17-3 overall.

“The biggest thing we’ve stressed with them is one game at a time,” Scholeno said. “Let the coaches focus on what we need to prepare for and then the girls can bring what they know they can bring every single game so we can keep moving forward.”
Falconer led from the opening tip Tuesday, but never really put the Hillbillies away until late in the game.
Harper hit a 3-pointer on the first possession of the game and Dani Krenzer hit another 3-pointer shortly after as the Golden Falcons took an 8-0 lead early. The margin grew to 10-0 on an Emily Zaranek bucket before Fredonia’s Bailey Wegrzynowski put Fredonia on the board with a basket midway through the quarter.
Falconer’s lead stood at 15-6 after a first quarter during which the Hillbillies turned the ball over 10 times.
Midway through the second quarter, the Golden Falcons had what would turn out to be their biggest lead of the game at 24-7 after an 8-0 run that included baskets from Autumn Lynn, Kayla Jo Lynn, Emily Zaranek and Augustine Krenzer.
“We stress every quarter that it’s 0-0. We need everyone,” Scholeno said. “We all practice ball handling. We all practice rebounding. At any point, I have four girls that can be in multiple spots on any possession.”
Falconer led 27-13 at halftime before Fredonia got back into the game in the second half. A 6-0 run to start the third quarter, including a 3-pointer from Wegrzynowski made it 27-19, but Dani Krenzer answered with a 3-pointer to give the Golden Falcons another double-digit lead.
Falconer led 32-21 entering the fourth quarter before the Hillbillies’ Ella Koopman hit a 3-pointer to make it an eight-point game. The Golden Falcons scored the next four points before Makayla Tabone hit back-to-back 3-pointers that actually made it a six-point game with under three minutes remaining.
“We need all 10, even on the bench. When you are on the court I need you, when you are on the bench, I need you,” Scholeno said. “A lot of teams are going to zero in on certain things that they know are our weaknesses.”
But while Falconer made six free throws over its final six possessions of the game, Fredonia turned it over five times at the other end of the floor, ending any thoughts of a late-game comeback.
NOTES: Falconer shot 14 of 53 (26.4%) from the field, including 3 of 10 from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 18 times. Emily Zaranek had 5 points and four rebounds for the Golden Falcons. … Fredonia finished 11 of 37 (29.7%) from the field, including 4 of 10 from 3-point range, and turned the ball over 33 times. Tabone led the Hillbillies with 11 points and two blocked shots to go along with two steals; Koopman had 7 points, five rebounds and three steals; Wegrzynowski had 6 points, five rebounds and two steals; and Jordan Lucas grabbed five rebounds.
