Drake Leads Red Raiders To Win

Marley Drake is finding herself in the company of some of the finest girls basketball players in Jamestown High School history.

On Saturday, the senior guard poured in 32 points to push her career total to 1,188, good for fourth on the program’s all-time list and lead the Red Raiders to an 84-37 victory over West Seneca West in an Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division 1 game at McElrath Gymnasium.

Drake, who moved past Sandy Wasko (Class of 1984), is now 90 points behind No. 3 Tara Payne. In a loss earlier last week at Williamsville North, Drake passed Erin Cunningham and Anne Campion.

“Those names — when you talk about Jamestown girls basketball — are quite a group right there,” Red Raiders coach Ken Ricker said.

Drake was on fire from the start against the Indians, drilling five 3-pointers on her way to 17 first-quarter points as Jamestown (11-7, 6-4) built a 26-10 lead.

“We came out and ran some sets and she just made shots,” Ricker said.

By halftime, the Red Raiders’ lead was 48-16, aided by 14 points from Alyson Canfield, who had all four of her 3-pointers by the break.

“It was nice to come out and really jump on them,” Ricker said. “When you have a senior who has a 17-point first quarter, that’s going to help quite a bit.”

In addition to her points, Drake collected four assists and four steals; Mickia Freeney added 15 points, 10 assists and seven steals; Kylie O’Brien scored 11 points to go along with 10 rebounds; and Anna Engquist chipped in 8 points and eight offensive rebounds.

Leading the way for West Seneca West (6-11, 0-9) were Sophia Robertson with 18 points and Kathryn Quinn with 12.
