MAYVILLE — After the girls wrestling match blazed trails on the mats before them, the boys took their turn in a wrestling dual meet between the Chautauqua Lake Thunderbirds and the Fredonia Hillbillies at Chautauqua Lake High School on Wednesday night.
In the end, the Thunderbirds were too experienced and too strong for the Hillbillies to compete with, as Chautauqua Lake came away with a resounding 57-12 victory.
“Whether we’re having an awesome season or not, I always love my guys,” said Thunderbirds coach Ken Rowe. “That wrestling room is full of guys that want to be there. Right now, we’re in a good spot, we’re wrestling well. Hopefully, we finish the season that way.”
The Thunderbirds (3-0) secured four pins and a decision, along with five forfeit wins to account for 57 points. The quickest falls for the Thunderbirds went to Gavin Burchanowski at 102 pounds in 46 seconds over Fredonia’s Cannon LeGrano, and Marty Ohlsson at 132 pounds in 31 seconds over Fredonia’s Julian Ocasio.
Much more competitive battles were seen between Chautauqua Lake’s Jayden Malecki and Fredonia’s Ian Woods at 172 pounds with a pin at 3:48, and at 126 pounds with a pin in 3:25 by Chautauqua Lake’s Jordan Joslyn over Fredonia’s Lucas Hoffman.
“At 126, that was a great match. Jordan (Joslyn) right now is extremely difficult to beat,” said Rowe. “(Hoffman) is their main guy, he’s a scrapper and he’s good. (Joslyn) is just on right now. That entire match he was a step ahead and put himself in good position. A tough kid vs. a tough kid, but our boy happened to have a better day today.”
The Thunderbirds’ Mason Maring secured a 4-0 decision over the Hillbillies’ Dawson Russo, as both regular 189-pounders wrestled up at 215 pounds.
“I’ve been trying to get Maring to open up a little bit. When he does he wrestles better,” said Rowe. “Fredonia is coached well, there is a ton of fight in them. If you don’t wrestle well, at any time they can make it a match and (Russo) definitely did in that one.”
Chautauqua Lake won via forfeit at 110 pounds, 145 pounds, 152 pounds, 160 pounds and 285 pounds. Both teams forfeited at 118 points, accounting for Fredonia’s sixth forfeit.
“We’re just too thin. Even on the best of days, we’re too thin. It’s hard to compete giving up six forfeits,” said Fredonia head coach Joe Santilli. “It’s not so much that having wrestlers at those weights was going to make a difference in the outcome, but for the sport of wrestling, I want to see competitions. … I love the sport and it’s not good for the sport.”
The bright spots for the Hillbillies (1-3) on the night were Cameron Ingram and Dominick Collazo, who each recorded a pin to account for the 12 total points for Fredonia. Ingram’s pin of Robert Head at 138 pounds was in just 21 seconds, while Collazo battled with Caleb Szymanowski at 189 pounds before an eventual pin for Collazo at 3:04.
