No. 7 Jamestown Hosts No. 22 Kenmore West Friday

All seven local teams remaining in the Section VI football playoffs find themselves mentioned in the latest edition of the New York State Sportswriters Association’s rankings.

In Class A, Jamestown remains No. 7 after beating honorable-mention West Seneca West 33-15 last weekend. The Red Raiders will host No. 22 Kenmore West at Strider Field on Friday night. The teams did not play during the regular season.

In Class C, Fredonia remains No. 12 and will take on No. 7 Medina in the semifinals Friday in Medina. The Hillbillies beat Depew 47-20 last weekend while the Mustangs topped Eden/North Collins 48-7. Friday’s game will be a rematch of last year’s Section VI championship game, which Medina won 58-6 at Highmark Stadium.

Also in Class C, Salamanca is up three spots to No. 18 and will take on No. 8 Lackawanna on Saturday afternoon in the semifinals. The Warriors beat honorable-mention Cleveland Hill 51-20 last Friday while the Steelers beat No. 25 Southwestern 30-14 last Saturday. This Saturday’s semifinal will be a rematch of 2021 quarterfinal, which Lackawanna won 14-0 at Veterans Park.

In Class D, No. 4 Randolph will host No. 11 Clymer/Sherman/Panama while honorable-mention Franklinville/Ellicottville will host No. 15 Portville in semifinals Friday night.

The Cardinals had a quarterfinal bye last weekend while the Wolfpack beat Wilson 35-7. The Titans beat Gowanda/Pine Valley 35-14 while the Panthers beat Frewsburg 49-14.

During the regular season, Randolph beat Clymer/Sherman/Panama 35-18 in Week 2 and Franklinville/Ellicottville beat Portville 16-8 in overtime during Week 4.

Class B Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove is honorable mention after losing to No. 25 West Seneca East by a point in last week’s quarterfinals.

In Class AA, St. Anthony of the Catholic High School Athletic Association remains No. 1 while St. Francis is No. 13, Lancaster is No. 14 and Orchard Park is No. 17. St. Joe’s is an honorable-mention selection.

In Class A, Somers of Section I and Garden City of Section VIII are the top-ranked teams. Amherst, Frontier, South Park and Williamsville North are all honorable-mention choices.

Maine-Endwell of Section IV is the top-ranked Class B school in the state. Iroquois is No. 2, Maryvale is No. 10 and Pioneer is No. 16 while Albion and Bishop Timon are honorable-mention selections.

Chenango Forks of Section IV is the top-ranked team in Class C and Tioga of Section IV is No. 1 in Class D.

GIRLS SOCCER

Frewsburg moved up a spot to No. 6 in this week’s Class C rankings while Ellicottville moved up six spots to No. 9 in Class D.

The Bears won the Section VI championship with a 5-0 semifinal victory over Portville and a 3-2 win over No. 24 Wilson in the title game last week.

The Eagles beat Franklinville 3-0 in the semifinals and No. 20 North Collins 1-0 in the title game last week.

Ellicottville will take on No. 4 Keshequa, the Section V champion, at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Niagara Wheatfield for the Far West Region crown. The Eagles lost to Fillmore 2-0 in last year’s regional at Caledonia-Mumford High School.

Frewsburg will have a rematch with No. 2 Byron Bergen at 11 a.m. Saturday at Niagara Wheatfield in the Far West Regionals. The Bees beat the Bears 1-0 in the same round last year at Caledonia-Mumford High School.

Fredonia, which won the Section VI Class B2 title Saturday, but lost to No. 13 Lewiston-Porter in the crossover game Tuesday night, is ranked No. 14 in Class B.

In Class AA, Section VI champion Clarence is No. 2 and Lancaster is No. 19 while Shaker of Section II is the top-ranked team.

Section VI champion Williamsville East is No. 9, Niagara Wheatfield is No. 14 and Nardin is No. 24 in Class A while the top-ranked team is New Hartford of Section III.

Nichols is No. 3 and City Honors is No. 24 in Class B while Section II Schalmont is No. 1.

St. Mary’s of Lancaster is No. 4 in Class C and Waterford-Halfmoon of Section II is No. 1.

The top-ranked team in Class D is Mount Academy of Section IX.

BOYS SOCCER

Ellicottville was ranked No. 18 and Maple Grove was ranked No. 10 in Class D before Monday night’s Section VI championship game. The Eagles beat the Red Dragons 3-2 in double-overtime and will take on No. 2 Fillmore, the Section V champion, at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Spencerport High School in the Far West Regionals.

Portville was ranked No. 7 and Holland/Franklinville/West Valley was ranked No. 15 before Monday night’s title game. Portville won 3-1 and will take on No. 1 Avon, Section V’s champion, at 5 p.m. Friday at Spencerport High School. Avon beat No. 10 Red Creek on Wednesday night in the Rochester area’s Class C crossover game.

In Class AA, Section VI champion Clarence is No. 5 and Williamsville North is No. 15 while Scarsdale of Section I is the top-ranked team.

Niagara Wheatfield, the Section VI champion, is No. 11, Grand Island is No. 20 and Williamsville South is No. 22 in Class A while Garden City of Section VIII is No. 1.

Lewiston-Porter, which beat unranked Lafayette for the overall Section VI Class B crown Tuesday, is No. 5 in Class B while East Aurora is No. 15. Briarcliff of Section I is the top-ranked team.

Section VII Chazy is No. 1 in Class D.
