Jayhawks Drop Pair At Shapiro Classic

ROCHESTER — In another tough battle, the Jamestown Community College men’s basketball team fell to Cecil College by a score of 66-60 at the Murph Shapiro Classic hosted by Monroe Community College on Sunday afternoon.

The Jayhawks (2-4) were led by sophomore forward Traden Gray (Frewsburg/Frewsburg Central) and freshman guard Jared Martin (Norwich, Conn./Springfield Commonwealth Academy) who had 15 points apiece with sophomore guard Chad Chambers (Calera, Ala./Calera High) adding 10 points. On the glass, sophomore guard/forward Josiah Ransom (Orange Park, Fla./Helena High) had eight rebounds with sophomore guard Brian Fajardo (Bronx/Aeci Charter High) and Gray each adding seven rebounds.

Jamestown CC had a hill to climb late in the first half, down 19-8 with just over five minutes until the break. The Jayhawks put together a 9-1 run to make it 20-18 with over two minutes to go in the half. The run got off and running with a pair of baskets from Martin and a 3-pointer from Chambers.

The Jayhawks got their first lead of the game with a minute to go with a 3-pointer from Gray off the feed from Chambers to make it 23-22. After a pair of free throws from the Seahawks, Gray knocked down another 3-ball to retake the lead. To end the half, Cecil made a 3-pointer of its own to have the 27-26 edge at the break.

Jamestown CC went blow for blow with Cecil, keeping it within a two-possession game in the first eight minutes of the second half. The Seahawks would build a lead of no greater than seven on a few occasions but the Jayhawks continued to battle.

Down 49-42 with under 10 minutes left in regulation, the Jayhawks scored six unanswered points to make it 49-48 at the 8:14 mark.

The Seahawks did just enough to maintain the lead and pushed their lead to 11 points with just over a minute left in regulation.

The Jayhawks went 22 for 62 (42.3%) from the floor while the Seahawks went 24 for 61 (39.3%).

Jamestown CC controlled the glass with 41 rebounds to Cecil’s 33.

Jamestown CC fell to No. 3 Sullivan County CC 88-63 on Saturday in Rochester.

The Jayhawks (2-3) were provided a spark offensively from the bench with Ransom scoring 21 points, going 6 for 8 from the floor, 2 for 3 from 3-point range and 7 for 9 from the free throw line. Martin added 12 points in the effort.

Jamestown CC went 18 for 45 (40%) from the field with Sullivan County CC going 35 for 61 (57.4%) from the floor. The Generals grabbed 37 rebounds to the Jayhawks’ 25 boards.

The Jayhawks will be back in action this Wednesday as they open Region 3 play at Erie Community College at 7:30 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

ROCHESTER — On the second day of the Murph Shapiro Classic at Monroe Community College, the Jamestown CC women’s basketball team fell to Lackawanna College by a score of 70-66.

The Jayhawks (2-3) were led by sophomore guard D’Auzhanay Harden (Erie, Pa./Erie High) with 23 points to go along with nine rebounds. Freshman forward Grace Lundmark (Falconer/Falconer Central) recorded her first collegiate double-double, scoring 10 points while grabbing 10 rebounds. Sophomore forward Hannah Hicks (Cleveland/Cleveland Heights) did her job on the glass, hauling in 14 rebounds.

After trailing by a score of 36-27 at the break, Jamestown CC was able to regroup and execute its offense, scoring three straight baskets to tie the game up at 36-36 with 6:40 remaining in the third quarter. The teams continued to trade blows throughout the frame, with neither gaining more than a two-possession lead. At the end of the third, Lackawanna made a 3-pointer from Olivia Lynwood to go up 47-42 but Harden quickly made it 47-46 with back-to-back baskets with one quarter remaining.

The Falcons found a window in the fourth quarter, scoring 13 unanswered points to make it 66-54 with under two minutes in regulation. The Jayhawks clawed back in the final minutes, scoring 12 of the game’s next 16 points including a pair of 3-pointers from Harden but the comeback came up short.

The Jayhawks went 27 for 62 (43.5%) from the field with the Falcons going 25 for 67 (37.3%) from the floor. Jamestown CC held the slight edge on the boards, grabbing 42 rebounds to Lackawanna’s 38 rebounds.

After a six-day break from their previous game, Jamestown CC was downed by Sullivan County CC on Saturday by a score of 68-41 in Rochester.

The Jayhawks (2-2) were led offensively by Lundmark with 14 points while Hicks added 8 points while grabbing 14 rebounds.

Jamestown CC went 19 for 54 (35.2%) from the floor with Sullivan County CC going 31 for 64 (48.4%) from the field. The teams were even on the glass, grabbing 31 rebounds apiece. The Generals did control the inside game, scoring 41 points in the paint to the Jayhawks’ 12 points.

The Jayhawks will be back in action this Wednesday as they travel to Erie Community College to begin Region 3 play at 5:30 p.m.

WRESTLING

WASHINGTON, Pa. — Continuing their strong start to the 2022-23 season, the Jamestown Community College wrestling team placed eighth out of 14 teams at the Washington & Jefferson Invitational, scoring 68 points.

The Jayhawks also had four wrestlers place at the invite with Mohammed Mustafa Salimi (Kabal, Afghanistan/Ghazi High) placing first in the 174-pound class, Brendon Ramsey (Panama/Panama Central) placing second in the 133-pound class, Brock Johnson (Falconer/Falconer Central) placing fourth in the 197-pound class and Luke Potts (Pittsburgh/West Allegheny High) placing sixth in the 133-pound class.

Salimi started his day out quickly, getting the fall over Loyal Holm of Southern Virginia in 1:17. In his second match of the day, Salimi picked up a 7-3 decision win over David Bancroft of Gettysburg College.

In the semifinals, Salimi needed extra time to continue his win streak, getting the 6-4 sudden victory win over Eli Crum of Lycoming College. In the championship match, Salimi earned the 20-9 major decision win over Tyson Hoopes of Southern Virginia.

Like Salimi, Ramsey started his day off fast, getting the fall over Jack Nelson of Southern Virginia needing 2:20 to do so. In his next match, Ramsey gutted out a 5-4 decision victory over Thomas Conselyea of Lycoming College.

In the semifinal match, Ramsey continued to show his grittiness by getting a 7-4 win over Austin Brett of Fairmont State. In the championship match, Ramsey fell to Hunter Swedish of Washington & Jefferson College by a score of 8-2.

Johnson followed suit with his teammates, starting the day by getting the fall over Russell Wismer of Penn State Behrend needing 1:33 to get the win. In his next match, Johnson got the 17-2 technical fall against Howie Congdon of Thiel College to put him in the semifinals.

In the semifinals, Johnson fell to Dwayne Johnson of Alderson Broaddus by a 12-2 major decision. In the consolation round, Johnson was edged out by Brendan Loder of Gettysburg College by a 3-1 decision.

Potts started out his day with a 5-2 decision win over Anthony Coukart of Lycoming College before falling to Swedish by a 19-3 technical fall.

Moving into the consolation round, Potts found redemption by getting the fall over Jack Nelson of Southern Virginia in just 46 seconds. In the following match, Potts grinded out an 8-4 decision win over Samuel Hanley of Lycoming College. In the fifth-place match, Potts fell to Conselyea by a score of 7-2.

De’Aonte Hutchinson (Baltimore/Edgewood High) picked up a pair of wins in the 125-pound class while 184-pounder Alex Christy (Fredonia/Fredonia High) and 157-pounder Fareed Muhammad (Cleveland/Garfield Heights) each picked up one win on the day.

The Jayhawks will be back in action this Saturday as they travel to Keystone College for the Keystone Quad starting at 11 a.m.
