Jamestown Cracks Top 10 In Class A

The New York State Sportswriters Association has ranked four local schools in the top 10 of their respective classes heading into Week 6 of the high school football season.

Jamestown is ranked No. 10 in Class A, up from No. 11 a week ago, after beating Niagara Falls 54-0 last Friday at Strider Field. The Red Raiders will travel to Frontier tonight for a Class A1 matchup with the Falcons.

Randolph remained No. 5 in Class D after beating honorable-mention Gowanda/Pine Valley 54-6 last Friday. The undefeated Cardinals will host Wilson tonight.

Franklinville/Ellicottville moved up one spot to No. 9 in Class D after beating Frewsburg 28-6 last Friday. The Titans will host Gowanda/Pine Valley in Franklinville tonight.

Portville moved up a spot to No. 10 in Class D after topping honorable-mention Clymer/Sherman/Panama 9-3 last Saturday afternoon. The Panthers will host Cattaraugus-Little Valley tonight.

The Wolfpack remained honorable mention and will visit Frewsburg tonight.

In Class C, Fredonia moved up four spots to No. 19 after beating Silver Creek/Forestville 41-7 last Friday at the Orange Bowl.

Southwestern entered the rankings at No. 23 after beating Salamanca 15-10 a week ago.

The Trojans will host the Hillbillies at Charles A. Lawson Field tonight.

Salamanca moved down from No. 11 to honorable mention after losing to Southwestern last week. The Warriors will look to get back in the win column tonight against Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton at Veterans Park.

Eden/North Collins remained honorable mention in Class C, despite losing to Lackawanna 26-7 last Saturday. The Raiders host Depew tonight.

In Class B, Falconer/Cassadaga Valley/Maple Grove remained honorable mention, despite losing to Maryvale 13-7 last Friday. The Golden Cougars visit Dunkirk tonight.

Local teams ranked in Class AA include: No. 11 Bennett, No. 14 Lancaster, No. 19 St. Francis, No. 23 Orchard Park and No. 24 Canisius.

In Class A, McKinley is No. 21 while Kenmore West, South Park, Starpoint, Williamsville East, Williamsville North, Williamsville South and WNY Maritime/Health Sciences are all honorable-mention choices.

Iroquios is No. 2 in Class B, Maryvale is No. 14 and Albion is No. 24 while Cheektowaga, Olean, Pioneer and West Seneca East are honorable-mention selections.

In Class C, Medina is No. 6 and Lackawanna is No. 11 while Depew is an honorable-mention choice.

The top-ranked teams in the state are: Class AA St. Anthony of the Catholic High School Athletic Association, Class A Somers of Section I, Class B Maine-Endwell of Section IV, Class C Schuylerville of Section II and Class D Tioga of Section IV.

BOYS SOCCER

Maple Grove remained the top-ranked local boys team, sitting at No. 8 in Class D. The Red Dragons were No. 7 a week ago before beating Frewsburg 4-2 and Westfield/Brocton 5-0. Maple Grove has already beaten Chautauqua Lake and Silver Creek/Forestville this week.

Ellicottville remained No. 14 in Class D after beating Gowanda/Pine Valley 8-1 and losing to Falconer/Cassadaga Valley 2-0 last week. The Eagles beat Salamanca/Cattaraugus-Little Valley on Monday, but lost to Portville on Wednesday.

In Class C, Chautauqua Lake remained No. 9 after beating Frewsburg 2-0 in its only game last week. The Thunderbirds then lost to Maple Grove on Monday before beating North Collins on Wednesday.

Portville is No. 16 in Class C, up two spots from last week. The Panthers beat Falconer/Cassadaga Valley 2-0 and Salamanca/Cattaraugus-Little Valley 4-0 last week. On Monday, Portville topped Randolph 1-0 and it beat Ellicottville 3-1 on Wednesday.

Clarence is No. 4 and Lancaster is No. 10 in Class AA.

In Class A, Williamsville South is No. 5 and Williamsville East is No. 18.

Lewiston-Porter is No. 8 in Class B and East Aurora is No. 13.

The top-ranked teams in the state are: Class AA Scarsdale of Section I, Class A Garden City of Section VIII, Class B Mechanicsville of Section II, Class C Avon of Section V and Class D Chazy of Section VII.

GIRLS SOCCER

Frewsburg is the lone local school in the rankings, sitting at No. 9 in Class C.

The Bears are undefeated at 11-0 overall, including 6-0 in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 2 West play. Frewsburg beat Silver Creek/Forestville 9-0 last week and has already beaten Chautauqua Lake and North Collins by identical 6-0 scores this week.

Clarence is No. 6 in Class AA and Lancaster is No. 17.

In Class A, Niagara Wheatfield is No. 8, North Tonawanda is No. 16 and Williamsville East is No. 18.

Iroquois is No. 12 in Class B.

In Class C, St. Mary’s of Lancaster is No. 3.

The top-ranked teams in the state are: Class AA Penfield of Section V, Class A New Hartford of Section III, Class B Schalmont of Section II, Class C Waterford-Halfmoon of Section II and Class D Mount Academy of Section IX.
