Southwestern Blanks Black Knights; Frewsburg Forfeits

SILVER CREEK — For the second week in a row the Southwestern Trojans’ stingy defense posted a shutout victory in Class C South football action.

The Silver Creek/Forestville Black Knights were the victim this week, suffering a 41-0 loss at the hands of the Trojans.

Southwestern took the lead early in the first quarter thanks to an 18-yard Matt Pannes touchdown run and with the failed 2-point conversion held a 6-0 lead for the rest of the quarter.

Then, in the second quarter, the Trojans really caught fire, scoring 28 points in less than 10 minutes. Pannes reached paydirt for the second time from 2 yards out and Neves Hoose capped off the 7-point drive with the PAT.

Southwestern’s defense collected the next touchdown after taking down Silver Creek/Forestville quarterback Matt Woleben and forcing a fumble that was collected by Colton Holbrook and returned 2 yards for the score. Another Hoose PAT made it 20-0.

After scoring on the ground, Southwestern took to the air on two touchdown passes from Owen Hayes. Hayes first connected with Pannes on a 22-yard score, then later found Cameron Lemk for a 4-yard catch that was capped off with a Hoose kick to go up 34-0 at halftime.

In the waning moments of the third quarter, Pannes capped off his huge game with a fourth-and-final trip to the end zone on a 29-yard run that gave the final 41-0 score with a Hoose kick.

Pannes finished the game with three touchdowns and 76 yards on 15 attempts from the ground, and added another 47 yards and a score on four receptions.

T’BIRDS RALLY FOR WIN

MAYVILLE — Once again the Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Brocton Thunderbirds found themselves in a hole in the fourth quarter, this time trailing Springville 14-12 heading into the final 12 minutes of a nonleague football game on Friday night.

The Thunderbirds rallied together and played inspired in the final quarter after an injury to teammate Mason Maring to come back and score two touchdowns to secure a 28-14 win.

Thunderbirds’ quarterback Hunter McCaslin first connected with Lawson Ormsby through the air on a 30-yard touchdown and then did it again on the 2-point conversion to take a 20-14 lead. They weren’t done there as McCaslin made another touchdown throw, this time to Carson Fairbank on a screen pass that he took 40 yards for the score. Brett Meadows put the final nail in the coffin by catching the 2-point conversion to go up 28-14.

The Thunderbirds built their lead in the second quarter on a Jack Bourgeois touchdown run then a McCaslin run that gave them a 12-6 lead at halftime because of two failed 2-point conversions.

Thunderbirds’ head coach Ryan Gibbs gave a lot of credit to the defense for providing the offense with plenty of good field position on its scores.

TITANS PREVAIL IN OT

ELLICOTTVILLE — Gian Nuzzo ran for a 2-yard touchdown in overtime and Franklinville/Ellicottville stopped Portville on its try as the Titans won their Class D showdown 16-8.

Franklinville/Ellicottville took an 8-0 lead in the second quarter when Noah Shenk caught a 15-yard touchdown from Nuzzo and Braylon Wyatt added the 2-point conversion run.

Portville (3-1, 2-1) tied the game in the fourth quarter as Luke Petryszak scored on a 6-yard run and added the 2-point conversion run.

The teams combined for just 310 yards of offense and turned the ball over five times while punting seven times.
