C/S/P Rolls To Victory Over Wilson

SHERMAN — Clymer/Sherman/Panama’s sophomore class came to play in their first game together on the varsity team.

The Wolfpack’s upperclassmen did some pretty good work themselves.

Added together, Coach Ty Harper’s team rolled to a 40-14 Class D victory over Wilson on Saturday afternoon at Harry W. Brosius Field.

“I love getting back on to the field with the team. We’re like one big family,” said senior Austin White, who missed most of last season with an injury. “We all work as a team and work as one. It’s great to come out here and get a win.”

In his first game as C/S/P’s starting quarterback, 10th-grader Tate Catanese went 13 of 17 for 177 yards through the air with nine of the completions and 143 of the yards going to classmate Bryce Hinsdale. Catanese also ran 16 times for 142 yards and two touchdowns.

“I’m very pleased with Tate,” Harper said. “To ask a kid at that age to go out and start at quarterback — he did some sophomore things out there — but overall he did a fantastic job.”

Fellow sophomores Alex Barmore and Carter Brink shined on the defensive side of the ball for the Wolfpack with Barmore making five tackles, including two for a loss, and a sack while Brink forced a fumble.

“We had a couple of great, explosive plays,” White said. “It was awesome. I loved it.”

Senior Trent Burchanowski ran 10 times for 104 yards and three touchdowns in the first half, and finished with 118 yards on the ground.

All told, C/S/P accumulated 542 yards of offense and 20 first downs.

“The kids were able to pick it up in the fourth quarter,” Harper said, “and we were able to finish the game strong.”

Defensive coordinator Chris Payne’s unit, led by seniors Lucas Lisciandro and White in addition to junior Anthony Cipolla, was equally impressive. The Wolfpack held the Lakemen to 98 yards of offense and just four first downs.

“The defense was incredible. … I thought the defense did a fantastic job today,” Harper said. “There was maybe one drive where they got us on a couple of things, but Payne did what Payne always does and made adjustments in the second half.”

C/S/P took it to Wilson from the start, scoring on its first two drives of the game. After a 14-yard run by Catanese set the Wolfpack up with a first-and-goal from the 1-yard line, Burchanowski raced around the edge for his first score of the game. After a Lakemen three-and-out, Burchanowski scored on a 40-yard run to make it 14-0 after the second of Hinsdale’s four successful point-after kicks on the afternoon.

C/S/P could’ve easily been up by more early in the second quarter, but consecutive red-zone fumbles gave the ball back to Wilson. With 7:55 left in the second quarter and the Wolfpack approaching the end zone for a fifth straight possession to start the game, the Lakemen came up with the big play they needed.

On first-and-10 from the Wilson 15-yard line, Catanese lined up a screen pass, but the ball dropped into the waiting hands of the Lakemen’s Carter Pytlik, who raced 80 yards for a touchdown. Still without an offensive first down, Class D’s newest team pulled within a score.

“Really, the only thing stopping us was ourselves in the first half,” Harper said. “We weren’t struggling to move the ball at all. We would get into the red zone and I think we had three turnovers there. … I was a little bit frustrated with that, but it’s Week 1 and you are going to have mistakes like that.”

Burchanowski and White had big runs on C/S/P’s next drive to set up a 9-yard touchdown from Catanese.

Wilson rattled off its first three first downs of the game on its next drive, the second of which came on a hook-and-ladder on third-and-9 from the 42-yard line. Jack Mahar eventually scored on a 5-yard run to make it 21-14 with 1:55 remaining in the first half.

“I’m always a fan of a good hook-and-ladder. Credit to Coach (Bill) Atlas for dialing one up,” said Harper, whose own Wolfpack used the trick play during their 2018 state final victory over Moriah. “It kind of got us on our heels and I think that was really the only scoring drive that they had.”

But the Wolfpack weren’t content to run out the clock and quickly put themselves in scoring position, keyed by a spectacular 34-yard catch by Hinsdale down to the 6-yard line. Two plays later, Burchanowski scored on a 4-yard run for his third score of the opening half.

“He’s so good, there’s no way around it,” Harper said of Hinsdale. “I think they actually had two guys on him and on the sideline I was thinking ‘Tate, check out of this and don’t throw him the ball.’ Bryce beat both guys and made a terrific catch. … That’s what I think you are going to see more and more with Bryce.”

After a scoreless third quarter, C/S/P put the game away in the fourth as Catanese scored on a 20-yard keeper and White scored on a 41-yard run.

It likely won’t be as easy for the Wolfpack next week as they travel to defending Section VI champion Randolph on Friday night.

“It’s no secret, things are going to get tougher,” Harper said. “We know that Randolph has a great team. … We are going to have to get things cleaned up this week and play our best game.”
