Tarp Skunks Lose Finale In Elmira

ELMIRA — After trailing 5-0, the Elmira Pioneers scored seven runs in the third inning and eventually beat the Jamestown Tarp Skunks 9-7 in their Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League regular-season finale Friday evening.

Jamestown, which lost its final five games of the year, finished sixth out of eight teams in the West Division with a 21-24 record.

The Tarp Skunks led 5-0 after a four-run third inning.

Cody Bey tripled with two outs in the first inning and scored on Pat Bigham’s RBI single.

In the third, Henry Martinez singled, Mark Tucker walked and Bey was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Will Dorrell then hit a one-out sacrifice fly before Brandon Lane’s two-run triple. Lane also scored on the play following an error.

But Elmira scored seven runs on four hits, four hit batters and a walk against Jamestown starter Patrick Demarco in the bottom of the third inning.

Ryan Rafalski relieved for the Tarp Skunks and walked in a run before getting the final out on a groundout. Jamestown would never lead again.

The Pioneers made it 8-5 in the fourth inning before the Tarp Skunks scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning. Martinez walked to open the frame and Bey hit a one-out single. After a double steal, Bigham hit a two-run single. After a Dorrell walk, Jamestown had runners at first and second with one out, but a pair of strikeouts ended the threat.

Elmira made it 9-7 in the bottom of the eighth inning before a strikeout with runners at first and second in the ninth ended the game.

Rafalski threw 5 1/3 innings, allowing just one run on two hits. He struck out three and walked six.
