Grey Strings Together Two More Good Starts In Buffalo

As Connor Grey’s professional baseball journey continues, it seems he has grown more and more comfortable with one ballpark in particular.

It just happens to be the one closest to his hometown.

The 2012 Frewsburg Central School graduate made two more starts at Sahlen Field last week, and once again they were two of his more impressive outings of the season for the Syracuse Mets.

On the Fourth of July, the 6-foot right-hander improved to 4-3 on the season when he allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three in five innings as the Mets beat the Bisons 4-3 in Buffalo.

Friends and family were rewarded six days later when Grey made his second start of the series in Buffalo. Minor League Baseball has moved to six-game series over the course of a week with Mondays normally a day off. Becasue of the holiday, the Mets and Bisons played on July 4 before a day off Tuesday, July 5. This put Grey in line to start the series finale between the teams last Sunday.

The 2016 St. Bonaventure University graduate did not disappoint.

Although he received his ninth no-decision in 15 starts this season, Grey threw five innings, allowing just one run and three hits while walking three and striking out six. He exited with the lead before Buffalo tied the game with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Syracuse then scored two more runs in the top of the seventh and went on to win 4-2.

One of Grey’s best starts of the season came May 19 in Buffalo in Game 1 of a doubleheader.

That day, he threw six innings of shutout ball, allowing six hits and walking two while hitting a batter and striking out seven. Grey again received a no-decision as the Mets won 1-0 in eight innings.

On the season, the 2016 20th-round pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks is 4-3 with a 5.45 earned run average. He has 64 strikeouts in 71 innings pitched. Over the course of his minor league career, the 28-year-old is 33-25 with a 4.17 ERA and 450 strikeouts in 494 innings pitched.

Syracuse is currently 39-48 on the season and eight games back of the first-place Durham Bulls in the International League’s East Division. The Mets are currently hosting the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp in a six-game series at NBT Bank Stadium in Syracuse with Grey in line to start Saturday’s game.

Jacob deGrom pitched in the Salt City on Thursday night. During a rehab start, the New York Mets ace threw four innings of two-hit ball, allowing an unearned run and walking one while striking out four in Syracuse’s 6-4 victory.

Syracuse has six weeklong home series remaining through the end of September, but is done with its series in Rochester or Buffalo for the season.
