Tarp Skunks Shut Out Niagara 6-0
NIAGARA FALLS — Jamestown’s starting pitchers have put together back-to-back dominant performances.
The latest came Monday evening as Derek Benzinger threw six innings of shutout ball in the Tarp Skunks’ 6-0 Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League West Division victory over the Niagara Power at Sal Maglie Stadium.
Benzinger, a Bergen Community College product, allowed just two hits and struck out six while walking three. Ryan Rafalski, a Mercyhurst University product, threw the final three no-hit innings, striking out four while walking one.
The duo’s performance came on the heels of Sunday’s seven-inning, two-hit performance of Travis Wells during which the Youngstown State University product allowed one unearned run and struck out eight while walking just one.
Jamestown (6-3) scored single runs in the first, second, sixth and seventh innings Monday while adding a pair of runs in the fourth.
Mark Tucker, Yogie Hartigan, Cody Bey, Jack Davis and Julian Thompson each had a hit.
In the first, Hartigan walked with two outs, stole second and scored on an error.
Will Dorrell walked with one out and stole a pair of bases in the second inning before scoring on Thompson’s sacrifice fly to left field.
In the fourth, Davis walked with one out and advanced to second on a balk. Dorrell then reached on an error that allowed Davis to make it 3-0. With Dan Maglio at the plate, Dorrell stole home to make it 4-0.
Bey singled and later scored on a groundout by Dorrell in the sixth inning.
Thompson doubled with one out and scored on an RBI single by Tucker in the seventh.
Niagara (4-5) stranded eight runners on base in the game, including the bases loaded in the third.
Andrew Ayers took the loss, allowing four runs on six walks in four innings despite not allowing a hit.
Jamestown returns to action this morning with an 11 a.m. kids’ day game at Diethrick Park against the Power.
