Tarp Skunks Nearly Throw No-Hitter In Win At Elmira

ELMIRA — The Jamestown Tarp Skunks nearly threw a no-hitter Wednesday at Dunn Field.

That was just the start of a crazy finish.

Elmira’s Bobby Marsh singled with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning and then, as the potential tying run, made the final out of the game at third base as Jamestown beat the Pioneers 4-3 in Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League West Division action.

Trailing 4-2 entering the bottom of the ninth, Elmira’s Frank Wayman led off with a walk. Marsh then singled off the Tarp Skunks’ Eric Crouse to break up the no-hit bid and send Wayman to third. Marsh advanced to second on a wild pitch before Cooper Smith struck out for the first out.

Joe Muzio then struck out on a dropped third strike as Jamestown catcher Jack Davis threw to Paidraig O’Shaughnessy for the second out of the inning. O’Shaughnessy then threw back to Davis, but Wayman beat the throw to make it a 4-3 game. Marsh attempted to get to third on the play, but Davis threw down to Mark Tucker. Initially, Marsh was ruled safe, but after the umpires held a conference, he was called out and the game was over.

Jamestown starter Eddie Galatas, Nate Johnson and Crouse combined on the one-hitter with four strikeouts, seven walks and three hit batters.

The Tarp Skunks went up 2-0 in the top of the first inning. Henry Martinez led off with a walk and Tucker singled to right field sending Martinez to third. Tucker then stole second and the throw went into center field allowing Martinez to score. Will Dorrell then grounded out sending Tucker to third and O’Shaughnessy hit an RBI groundout.

The Pioneers scored in the bottom of the second. Muzio walked with one out and stole second before Jonny Wall reached on an error. After a double steal, Kyle Chmielewski hit an RBI sacrifice fly to left field, but Wall was thrown out at third on the play.

In Jamestown’s half of the fourth inning, O’Shaughnessy was hit by a pitch and Cody Bey walked ahead of Davis’ infield single down the third base line. Nathan Smith then plated a run with a fielder’s choice. As Smith beat the throw to first base, Bey attempted to score on the play, but was thrown out by a lengthy distance at the plate.

In the Tarp Skunks’ fifth, Julian Thompson singled to center field to lead off the frame. On a full-count pitch, Thompson took off for second and Royce Frazier checked his swing at the plate. Thompson was initially called out at second on the stolen-base attempt, but the home plate umpire called the pitch a ball allowing both runners to reach safely. A pair of Elmira coaches were ejected as a result of the play, one immediately after the call, and the other later in the inning. Martinez followed with a bunt single and Tucker hit a sacrifice fly to left field.

Elmira made it 4-2 in the bottom of the eighth. Wall walked and Chmielewski was hit by pitch before JaNai Vaughn reached on a fielder’s choice. After a passed ball, Wall scored on a Lucas Berube RBI groundout. Crouse got out of the inning with a strikeout.

After an off day today, the Tarp Skunks will return to Diethrick Park on Friday against the Auburn Doubledays and Saturday against the Pioneers. Both games are set for 6:30 p.m.
