CHAUTAUQUA — Sandhills Community College remains comfortably in front as a team after the second round of the NJCAA Division III Golf Championship.

The race for individual honors?

Well, that’s an entirely different story.

Damian Guerrero of the College of Dupage shot a 2-under par 70 Wednesday on the Lake Course at Chautauqua Golf Club to share medalist honors with Sandhills CC’s Austin Wood and, most importantly, moved into a first-place tie with Andreas Huber, also of Sandhills CC, atop the leaderboard with a two-day total of 145, 1-over par.

Wood stands alone in third place at 2-over; Leo Amilloni of Niagara County CC is in fourth at 4-over; and Adam Hathaway and Alex Martin, both of Sandhills CC, are tied for fifth at 5-over.

Rounding out the top 10 are Troy Loughry of Butler County CC at 6-over; Austin Quillian of Georgia Military College and Carson Witherspoon of Sandhills CC at 7-over; and Lurner Benton of Georgia Military College and Sam Faulhaber of the College of Dupage at 10-over. There were 16 rounds in the 70s on a sunny day, which was in stark contrast to Tuesday’s rainy and wet conditions.

As was the case in the opening round, all five Sandhills CC’s golfers shot in the 70s, while the College of DuPage had four of its five players accomplish that yesterday. Still, the North Carolina school finds itself at 588 at the tournament’s halfway point, 36 shots in front of the community college from Glen Ellyn, Illinois.

Host school Jamestown CC didn’t fare as well as it did in the opening round. Traden Gray followed up his opening-round 77 with an 86, which puts him in a three-way tie for 22nd place. Josh Brown shot a 95 and is in a two-way tie for 56th place; Noah Adams registered a 96 and is in a two-way tie for 58th; and Kyle Smallback recorded a 97 and is in 60th place.

Shooting a 293 in the second round — two shots better than in the first round — Sandhills CC is at 588 for the tournament. The College of DuPage’s 303 on Wednesday was 18 shots better than in round one and it stands in second place at 624.

Following are the remaining team scores: Niagara County CC 636, Georgia Military College 637, Minnesota State Tech 650, Nassau CC 662, Butler County CC 666, County College of Morris 688, Jefferson CC 698 and Jamestown CC 726.

In the women’s tournament, Scotty Foley of Sandhills CC followed up her first-round 82 with a 78 and stands at 160, 10 shots in front of Ava Ray, also of Sandhills CC.

Julia Bazata of Oxford is at 180, McCarthy Lang of Niagara County CC is at 184, Rory Smith of Adirondack CC is at 185 and Kennedy Lang of Niagara County CC is at 190. The women will tee off today at No. 1, beginning at 9 a.m.

NOTES: Josh Kerley of Ocean County CC shot an 82 Wednesday and finds himself in 26th place, but he recorded the shot of the tournament thus far when he aced the eighth hole. … Play for the men resumes today at 9 a.m. on the 10th tee and at 9:20 a.m. at the first tee. Jamestown CC’s Gray will tee off on No. 1 at 10:10 a.m., followed by Brown at 10:20 a.m., Adams at 10:30 a.m. and Kyle Smallback at 10:50 a.m.

Starting at $3.50/week.
