FREWSBURG — Trailing 2-0 at the midway point of Monday’s Section VI Class C prequarterfinal, Frewsburg baseball coach Eric Haglund gathered his team in front of the dugout for a little chat.

He didn’t raise his voice.

Heck, he didn’t even say much.

But the message was clear.

“I told them to come together as a team and figure it out,” Haglund said.

Guess what?

It worked.

Sparked by a pinch-hit RBI double by senior Trent Bjork, the Bears scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and then rode the pitching of freshman Chase Haglund to a 6-2 victory over Cattaraugus-Little Valley at the Robert H. Jackson Athletic Complex.

The win improves seventh-seeded Frewsburg’s record to 10-9 and moves it on to today’s 5 p.m. quarterfinal game at No. 2 Gowanda.

Cattaraugus-Little Valley (3-13), the No. 10 seed, made things very interesting early, scoring a run in both the first and second innings to stake starter Brayden Young to a 2-0 lead. And it remained that way until Coach Haglund’s “conversation” with his players before they batted in the bottom of the fourth.

After Vincent Sanfilippo led off with a single, Bjork ripped an RBI double down the left-field line to trim the deficit to 2-1.

“He’s been working hard in the cage every single day,” Coach Haglund said of Bjork. “He’s been a little bit up and down during the season, but when the moment counted he pulled through.”

Young then walked Mitchell Lee, which brought in reliever Ryan Harper, who promptly hit Garrett Brink with a pitch to load the bases. One out later, Bjork scored on a wild pitch to tie the game and Jonah SanAngelo was walked to load the bases. Harper then walked Peyton Dustin and hit Chase Haglund with a pitch, pushing Frewsburg’s lead to 4-2.

The Bears tacked on a pair of insurance runs — one on Mason Eckman’s RBI single in the fifth and the other on Chase Haglund’s single in the sixth — which was more than enough for the latter, who gave up four hits in the first two innings, but none the rest of the way. He finished with nine strikeouts and four walks.

“Good for a ninth-grader,” Coach Haglund said of his son. “It was a good experience. I was in the same scenario when I played. It was 14-4 against Pine Valley when I was in ninth grade and Coach (Bob) Schmitt moved me up (to the varsity). He gave me the opportunity and I pulled through as well.”

Frewsburg’s second postseason opportunity is this afternoon at Gowanda.

“They’re a great team,” Coach Haglund said. “It’s going to be a dogfight. Look forward to playing.”

JOHNSTOWN POWERS WILSON

MAYVILLE — Wilson’s Tyler Johnston struck out 13 in a five-hitter as the ninth-seeded Lakemen rallied past No. 8 Chautauqua Lake for an 8-2 Section VI Class C prequarterfinal victory.

Wilson will travel to No. 1 Portville this afternoon for a quarterfinal game. The Panthers’ lone loss this season came at the hands of Canisius.

The Thunderbirds led 2-0 in the fourth inning Monday before Wilson scored five in the fifth. Hamza Merrick singled and Justin Messing reached on Chautauqua Lake’s lone error of the game before Drew Dabill hit a one-out, two-run double. Johnston later hit a two-run double for a three-run lead.

The Lakemen tacked on another run in the sixth inning and two more in the seventh.

Kalen Miller had two singles and Lawson Ormsby doubled for the Thunderbirds. Tate Olson knocked in both runs with a two-run single. Jalen Parkhurst struck out three and walked one in five innings.

“We had three walks and one error,” Chautauqua Lake head coach Matt Cummings said. “We played pretty well, just couldn’t get the bats going.”

DUNKIRK STUNNED

ALBION — No. 8 Albion scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to knock off Dunkirk, the No. 9 seed, 7-6 in a Class B1 prequarterfinal baseball game.

Javy DeJesus led Dunkirk’s offense with three hits and a sacrifice fly; Marcel Carter added two hits and drove in a pair of runs; Brady Corbett belted a triple; and Scott Korzenski and Jack Lanski both added singles.

The Marauders graduate nine seniors, including Carter, Korzenski, Alex Ahlstrom, Jack Lanski, Nick Zatorski, Bryson Travis, Jayxiel Orsini, Nathan Pakulski and Bryson Travis.

Albion will now meet top-seeded City Honors in today’s quarterfinals.

RANDOLPH FALLS

HOLLAND — A three-run fifth inning and a five-run sixth sent No. 4 Holland past No. 13 Randolph 12-6 in a Class C prequarterfinal.

The Dutchmen will host No. 5 Silver Creek/Forestville this afternoon after the Black Knights beat No. 12 Cassadaga Valley 6-0 in another prequarterfinal Monday.

The Cardinals led 6-4 after their half of the fifth inning before Holland came to life.

Clay Kline singled and stole second before Nolan Smith hit an RBI single. Smith eventually made it to third base before Bryton Grisewood tied the game with an RBI single. With two outs, Grisewood scored on a passed ball for a 7-6 lead.

In the sixth, Kline, Smith, Grisewood, Noah Howlett and Dax Bengert all hit RBI singles.

For Randolph, Dillon Schrader had three hits, including a double; Payton Slade and Kyle Senn each had two hits; and Luke Pagett doubled. Slade struck out six in five innings on the mound.

Jack Brown and Colten Smith combined for eight strikeouts for Holland.

WARRIORS ELIMINATED

SALAMANCA — A three-run lead was not enough as No. 11 Barker scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning and held off No. 6 Salamanca in the bottom of the frame for a 5-4 Class C prequarterfinal victory at Veterans Memorial Park.

The Raiders will take on No. 3 Maple Grove today in Bemus Point.
