Fredonia, Westfield Split Non-League Doubleheader

FREDONIA — In preparation for the upcoming Section VI playoffs, Fredonia and Westfield split a nonleague doubleheader Saturday.

Twenty-six miles away, Falconer was doing the Hillbillies a favor.

Kayla Lynn hit a two-out walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning as the Golden Falcons beat Olean 4-3 in Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 West softball Saturday at Ernie Strickland Field.

Falconer improved to 8-2 overall and 7-2 in the league with the victory, but more importantly handed the Huskies (10-7, 9-2) their second league loss giving Fredonia (13-2, 11-1) the league title outright.

“It’s really nice. We’re back-to-back league champions. … We’re basically three years straight finishing second in the section. The league title isn’t what we’re looking at,” Fredonia head coach Jesse Beers said Saturday night. ” … We’re looking for a blue patch. That’s really where our mindset is. … Now the season really starts. I feel like we’re playing pretty good ball at the right time.”

Lynn also had a triple and three RBIs for the Golden Falcons while Emily Rhinehart threw a seven-hitter with six strikeouts and helped her own cause with two hits, including a double, and a walk.

For Olean, MaKenna Pancio and Olivia Krafts were both 2 for 3.

Back in Fredonia, the Hillbillies beat the Wolverines 3-0 in Game 1 as Jordan Lucas threw a one-hitter with nine strikeouts and no walks.

In the third inning, Kyleigh Waterman tripled and scored a run, Sarah Davis singled, Lila Cameron singled and Jaelyn Davis hit a two-run triple.

Haleigh Dellow struck out nine in the loss and Madyson Burgess singled for the Wolverines’ lone hit.

In Game 2, Eva Gnadzinski scored the winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning for a 5-4 Westfield victory.

Tied 4-4, Gnadzinski walked to open the fifth and moved to second on Tanleigh Bestine’s single before scoring on an error after Brynn Ernewein bunted.

Dellow reached on an error and scored in the first inning. In the third, Drew Ernewein reached on an error and scored, Gnadzinski singled, Bestine walked and Madyson Burgess hit a two-run single.

For Fredonia, Jenna Truby and Erin Schrantz both singled and scored in the second inning. Francesca Pucci also scored in the second while Jaelyn Davis singled and scored in the third on a Gabby Matos sacrifice fly.

Gnadzinski struck out three in five innings and Ashlynn Delcamp struck out two in four innings.
