JOHNSTOWN, Pa. The Jamestown Rebels will host a pair of North American Hockey League playoff games this week at Northwest Arena.

Unfortunately, that’s because they lost Saturday night in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.

The second-seeded Tomahawks scored a pair of early third-period goals to break a 1-1 tie and beat the third-seeded Rebels 3-1 at 1st Summit Arena at Cambria County War Memorial.

“I’m sure both teams were tired, but we didn’t generate anything,” Jamestown head coach Joe Coombs said Sunday evening. ” Quite honestly, we weren’t very good.”

With the best-of-five series tied 1-1, Game 3 will be Thursday at 7 p.m. at Northwest Arena.

Game 4 will take place Saturday at 7 p.m. at Northwest Arena with an if-necessary Game 5 on Sunday back in Johnstown at 6 p.m.

“For how hard this team has worked to get where they’re at, I’m a little shocked,” Coombs said. “At the end of the day, it’s a best of five, and now it’s a best of three. You have to be good three times, that’s what the playoffs are all about.”

Johnstown opened the scoring Saturday just over seven minutes into the first period when Braedon Ford scored from Jake Black and Tyler DesRochers.

Jamestown answered with less than two minutes remaining in the period as Jak Vaarwerk tallied from Ethan Janda and Reid Lune.

Neither team could find the back of the net in the second period, but the Tomahawks cashed in twice in the final period.

First, Ford scored his second of the game from Jacob Badal and Jake Black. Then, just over two minutes later Black, the NAHL’s leading goal scorer during the regular season, scored his first of the postseason from Ford and Badal.

“I was trying to get guys started. It was one of those nights where I thought some guys were really struggling. I played some other guys who played OK, but we need everybody to be on the same page,” Coombs said. “The goals were breakdowns. That (top) line was better, but if we want to continue on we have to be a better team. We need much better, not just from one or two guys, but seven, eight or nine guys.”

Matthew O’Donnell needed to make just 13 saves in net for the win. The Rebels were credited with just five shots on goal in the second period and two in the third.

Nolan Suggs stopped 29 of 32 shots he faced for Jamestown.

Starting at $3.50/week.
