Red-Hot Rebels’ Win Streak Now Stands At 9
DANBURY, Conn. — Man, Jamestown is on a roll.
John Lundy’s overtime goal — assisted by Jak Vaarwerk and Lucas (Peter) Klemm — sent the Rebels to 3-2 North American Hockey League victory over Danbury on Saturday night at the Danbury Ice Arena to complete a weekend sweep and extend their winning streak to nine straight.
Coupled with a 7-6 win over the Hat Tricks on Friday, Jamestown finds itself in second place in the East Division with 71 points, one in front of third-place Johnstown. The Rebels finish their regular season this Thursday and Friday in Odenton, Maryland against the Black Bears.
The top four teams in the East Division qualify for the Robertson Cup postseason, and Jamestown has certainly put itself in good position to do just that.
On Saturday night, the Rebels fell behind 2-0 near the midway point of the second period, but evened the score on an unassisted goal by Mitch Lafay and a Klemm tally, courtesy of a helper from Ryan Waltman. The score remained 2-2 until Lundy’s game winner 2:07 into the overtime.
Goalie Nolan Suggs made 27 saves for Jamestown. Adam Johnson stopped 32 shots for Danbury.
In a wild game on Friday, Noah Szretter scored the eventual game winner at the 12:10 mark of the third period, courtesy of assists from Waltman and Lafay. Suggs was the winning goalie, working the final 10 1/2 minutes in place of starter Jon Howe, who surrendered six goals on 18 shots.
The Rebels came out blistering hot, opening up a 4-0 lead on goals by James Miller (assisted by Reid Lune and Evan West), Lundy (unassisted), Conor Sedlak (assisted by James Miller and Nathan Jurrens) and Klemm (assisted by Lundy and Max Hamstad.
Although Jamestown was armed with a 4-1 advantage heading into the second period, Danbury scored twice, sandwiched around a goal by Waltman (assisted by Vaarwerk and Nathan Jurrens) to narrow the deficit to 4-3.
In the crazy final period the Hat Tricks scored three times, but the Rebels tallied the first and last goals of the frame — Kolby Amici (assisted by Luke Devries) and Szretter (assisted by Waltman and Lafay) — to hold on for the victory.
