Westfield, Jamestown Stay Put; Clymer, Pine Valley Move Up In State Rankings

Westfield continued to be the highest-ranked local basketball team, holding down the No. 5 spot in Class D boys in the New York State Sportswriters Association rankings released Tuesday.

The Wolverines (16-1) coasted to easy wins at home against Brocton and Forestville last week. Westfield then beat No. 9 Clymer on Tuesday night.

The ninth-ranked Pirates (12-2) moved up a spot from last week after beating Frewsburg last Tuesday and Sherman on Saturday. Clymer closes this week with a game at Sherman on Friday night.

Pine Valley (11-2) jumped two spots to No. 16 after beating Panama and Ellicottville last week. The Panthers then lost to Cattaraugus-Little Valley on Tuesday night and will close this week at home against North Collins on Friday.

After losing to Pine Valley last Tuesday and beating Chautauqua Lake on Thursday, Panama (7-5) fell four spots to No. 17. Panama lost to Sherman on Tuesday night and will close this week at Falconer on Friday.

In Class C, Randolph (14-1) jumped two spots to No. 7 after beating Southwestern and Gowanda last week. The Cardinals coasted past Maple Grove on Tuesday night and will finish this week at Portville on Friday.

Salamanca (10-3) remained No. 8 in Class C after beating Depew last Sunday at Jamestown Community College. The Warriors’ CCAA Division 1 West first-place showdown with Olean was postponed last Friday. Salamanca, which lost to Fredonia on Tuesday night, will travel to Chautauqua Lake tonight and host Southwestern on Friday.

Jamestown (12-1) remained No. 19 in Class AA after beating Hamburg last Monday and taking over first place in ECIC Division 1 with a victory over No. 20 Orchard Park last Wednesday. The Red Raiders then went to Elmira for a nonleague victory Saturday. Jamestown will visit Orchard Park tonight before taking on Canisius at Hamburg High School on Saturday.

Class A is led by Transit Tech of New York City’s Public School Athletic League while Canisius is No. 12. Amherst, St. Joe’s, Health Sciences, Niagara Wheatfield, St. Francis and Williamsville East are honorable-mention selections.

In Class B, Section II Tamarac is No. 1 while Timon-St. Jude is No. 5, Olean is No. 7, Nichols is No. 14 and St. Mary’s is No. 20. Allegany-Limestone, Riverside, Lackawanna and Tapestry are honorable-mention choices.

St. Francis Prep of NYC’s Catholic High School Athletic Association is No. 1 in Class AA, Section VII Moriah is No. 1 in Class C and Section V Avoca/Prattsburgh is No. 1 in Class D.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Frewsburg and Randolph both moved up a spot in the Class C girls rankings.

The Bears (14-2) are now No. 21 after beating Dunkirk, Maple Grove and Cassadaga Valley last week. Frewsburg then beat No. 17 Portville on Monday night to tie the Panthers for first place in the CCAA Central Division. The Bears close this week with a game at Maple Grove on Thursday.

The Cardinals (12-3) moved up to No. 24 after beating Pine Valley, Panama and Olean last week. Randolph opened this week with a victory over Fredonia and will host Southwestern in a CCAA Division 1 West first-place showdown Thursday.

Clymer (11-3) moved up three spots in Class D to No. 16 after beating Panama last Friday night. The Pirates, lost to Silver Creek in overtime on Monday night, will host Chautauqua Lake on Thursday.

Panama dropped out of the rankings after being No. 16 last week.

South Shore of NYC’s PSAL is No. 1 in Class AA followed by No. 2 Lancaster, No. 4 Cardinal O’Hara, No. 20 St. Mary’s of Lancaster and No. 26 Williamsville North.

In Class B, Section V Pittsford Mendon is No. 1, Hamburg is No. 8, Sweet Home is No. 11, Iroquois is No. 14, Williamsville South is No. 17 and North Tonawanda is No. 25.

Section I Hastings is No. 1 in Class B, Depew is No. 7, Lewiston-Porter is No. 10 and Eden is No. 25.

Section IV Newark Valley is No. 1 in Class C and Section V Fillmore is No. 1 in Class D.
