ALBANY — Five second-round victories created a sense of optimism for local wrestlers Friday.
By the end of the afternoon, that excitement had turned to disappointment.
Local grapplers went 0 for 5 in the quarterfinals, ending any chance for a state title after the opening day of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association wrestling championships at MVP Arena.
When wrestlebacks continue this morning, the best hope for any local student-athlete will be a third-place finish.
Southwestern’s Carmine Calimeri, Tavio Hoose and Dontae Hoose, Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama’s Jordan Joslyn and Maple Grove’s Luke Tomlinson all suffered quarterfinal losses after securing byes into the second round and winning their opening matches there.

Those five will be joined by Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama’s Trent Burchanowski with opportunities to earn place finishes when wrestling begins at 9:30 this morning.
Calimeri, an eighth-grader at 102 pounds, pinned Section III South Jefferson/Sandy Creek’s Brock Frederick in 2:43 before losing to Section II Berne-Knox-Westerlo/Middleburgh’s Gabe English 5-2.
“Carmine’s weight class, even though he was the No. 2 seed, it’s totally loaded,” Southwestern head coach John Vogan said. “We really knew that every match would be a battle. For him to get on the podium is going to be a struggle.”
Tavio Hoose, also an eighth-grader at 172 pounds, defeated Section IV Sidney’s Trevor Harrington 4-3 before suffering a 5-3 loss to Section IV Windsor’s Dominick Weaver in the final seconds of his quarterfinal.
“Tavio wrestled awesome, he lost a close match, but I thought he wrestled well in both of his matches,” Vogan said. “Tavio had that single and it could’ve gone either way. The kid snuck his leg in there, merkled him to the mat and it was two.”
Dontae Hoose, a senior 215-pounder who placed sixth two years ago as a sophomore, pinned Section VIII Locust Valley’s Sean Roberts in a quick minute before Section V Bolivar-Richburg’s Trent Sibble took him down in 3:47.
“The goal for Dontae this year was to win a state championship, so that’s tough,” Vogan said. “He just got caught. It can happen to anybody. … It’s just part of the sport.”
Joslyn, a sophomore at 118 pounds, defeated Section III Lowville’s Patrick Grimsey 4-2 before a dramatic 4-3 loss to Section VI counterpart Daniel Kirsch of Pioneer in an ultimate tie-breaker. Kirsch handed Joslyn his first loss of the season two weeks ago at the Section VI state qualifier.
“He wrestled a good match, he just got beat,” CL/W/P head coach Ken Rowe said of Friday’s match against Kirsch. “The first time they wrestled this year, the specific things Jordan did to score, (Kirsch) was able to counter a lot of that (today).”
Tomlinson, a senior at 145 pounds, pinned Section III South Jefferson’s Aaron Briones in 1:34 before No. 1 seed Jackson Polo of Section VIII Cold Spring Harbor pinned him 4:29 into their quarterfinal match.
Burchanowski – the first Clymer student to ever qualify for the state tournament – went 1-1 and will continue wrestling today. The junior was beaten 10-5 by Tanner McKenna of Section II Warrensburg/Bolton in the second round and then earned a 3-2 victory over Cameron Mayfield of the Public School Athletic League’s Eagle Academy.
“He didn’t look as good as he has for a majority of the year. There were little flashes of it,” Rowe said. “Even in that last match, he started a little slow, but once he got settled in, he actually controlled a very good wrestler.”
Randolph junior Ryan Carpenter and senior Luke Pagett both went 1-2 on Friday and will not continue today.
Carpenter pinned Brody Fountain of Section X Malone 2:58 into their first-round match. Carpenter’s tournament came to an end with a 9-1 second-round loss to Connor Bushey of Section VII Beekmantown and a 3-1 wrestleback loss to John Zabielski-Ramos of Section VIII North Shore.
“It’s always good when you can come here as an underclassman to get a feel for the surroundings and the kind of competition you’ll face here,” Randolph head coach Todd Conley said. “To be here in what is really his second full year of wrestling … I’m excited to see what’s in store for him next year.”
Pagett was the first local wrestler to compete Friday and lost 4-0 to Section VIII Island Trees’ Ryan Mastropaolo. Pagett then pinned Section XI John Glenn’s Colin Presti in 3:26, but lost his final match 1-0 to Section III Lowville’s Sean Kelly.
“At the end of the day, I think he did the best he could,” Conley said. “He’s a super kid, very bright … he’s got a lot going for him. It was nice to get a win, but I’m sure he’s disappointed he didn’t go further.”
Southwestern sophomore Kenji Walters lost his only two matches. He suffered a 6-0 defeat to Aidan Shufelt of Section IV Groton in the second round and then was saddled with a 2-1 defeat by Ryan Farley of Section V Avon/Geneseo in the wrestlebacks.
“Not a good day. I did not expect him to go 0-2,” Vogan said. “He’s only a sophomore so he’ll just try to build upon the experience of coming here.”
