Red Raiders’ Formula Nabs Another Win

The Jamestown Red Raiders aren’t lacking for playmakers.

They don’t mind sharing the basketball.

And they play hard, especially with their suffocating full-court pressure.

It’s a formula that has worked quite nicely so far this season.

Saturday afternoon was the most recent example.

Jaral Farmer led four players in double figures with 15 points — he also had eight rebounds, five steals and four assists — as Jamestown breezed past West Seneca West 68-33 in an Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division 1 basketball game at McElrath Gymnasium.

The win improved the Red Raiders’ to 6-1 overall and 5-0 in the division.

Continued performances like the one against the Indians will serve them well moving forward.

“They played hard,” Jamestown coach Ben Drake said. “Even early in the season when it wasn’t the prettiest, we were playing hard. Really, it’s just trying to continue to get better. Every week we want to be playing a little bit better. That’s the goal.”

The Red Raiders were hitting on all cylinders from the start on Saturday. Highlighted by Farmer’s 9 points, Jamestown led 17-2 before the game was five minutes old, pushed the margin to 42-12 at halftime and to 62-19 after three quarters, a period in which they showed how entertaining and unselfish a group they can be.

Jaylen Butera, who finished with 11 points, turned one of his five steals into a layup at the other end followed shortly thereafter with a dunk, extending the Red Raiders’ lead to 46-12. Less than a minute later, they made four passes, the last to Trey Drake, who drilled a 3-pointer from the wing. Not long after, Drake (14 points, eight rebounds and three assists) capped his own 8-point run with a free throw that inflated the margin to 54-16 with 3:40 remaining in the period.

Finally, Sean Paige put together his own mini-highlight reel in the final minutes of the third quarter when he nailed a pair of treys sandwiched around a layup, courtesy of a nice pass from Drayce Garland. For the afternoon, Paige — the younger brother of current NBA player and former JHS star Jaysean Paige — connected on 4 of 5 shots from beyond the arc on his way to 14 points and four steals.

“That was one of his best overall games,” Coach Drake said of Paige. “His shot looked good, he knocked down a few 3s and he played hard. … I was happy for him.”

The Red Raiders hit the road this week, playing at Williamsville North on Tuesday and at Clarence on Friday. On Saturday, they play a nonleague game against Park School at Jamestown Community College.

But before Coach Drake left McElrath Gymnasium on Saturday he was feeling pretty good about where his team was at.

“That was one of the keys that we wanted to do was be unselfish, share the ball and make the right play, and I thought we did a pretty good job of that,” he said.

NOTES: Jamestown shot 27 of 61 from the floor and 7 of 20 from distance, and forced 26 turnovers, 18 of them steals. … The Red Raiders did struggle from the foul line, connecting on just 7 of 20 attempts. … West Seneca West (0-5 1-9), which was led by L. Freeland’s 10 points, connected on just 12 of 48 attempts and were outrebounded 42-26. … Behind 13 points from Max Knight, and 12 apiece from Xavier Foust and Tyrese Wofford, the Jamestown junior varsity downed West Seneca West 75-21 to run its record to 6-3 overall and 4-1 in the division.
