Success From The Arc Leads Red Raiders Past WSW

The Jamestown girls basketball team is scheduled to play in a one-day showcase Saturday at the Hammermill Center in Erie, Pennsylvania.

It could be argued that Coach Ken Ricker’s crew put on a showcase of a different kind Thursday night at McElrath Gymnasium.

The guard trio of Alyson Canfield, Marley Drake and Mickia Freeney combined for 10 3-pointers and forward Kylie O’Brien did her work in the low post to lead the Red Raiders to a 77-49 victory over West Seneca West in an Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division 1 basketball game.

The win improves Jamestown’s record to 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the division while the Indians fall to 3-7 and 1-4.

There was little doubt of the outcome last night after the Red Raiders raced to a 20-2 lead after the first quarter and then put on a long-distance shooting display in the second period. Of their eight made field goals, seven were from beyond the arc — three by Drake, three by Canfield and one by Freeney.

Armed with a 47-15 lead at the break, Jamestown cruised to the easy win.

Canfield finished with 24 points on 4 of 11 from the arc to go along with five rebounds; Drake was 5 of 10 from distance and dished out four assists; and Freeney added 9 points and 10 assists. Tack on 22 points and 10 boards from O’Brien and it was clear that the Red Raiders hadn’t let their road loss to Lancaster on Tuesday night bother them.

“We’ve been able to create some situations where we know we can get (Canfield and Drake) shots,” Ricker said. “Once we saw, especially early, the 1-2-2 (defense) we were going to get corner 3s and they were going to be open. We were going to use the high post and get them. We just knew. We manipulated the defense a little bit and got them going.”

By the end of the third quarter, Jamestown was in front 64-30 and extended it to 77-36 midway through the final eight minutes before West Seneca West ended the game on a 13-0 run.

“We’ve taken those two beatings on the road at Lancaster and Hamburg,” Ricker said. “I hope when they come here people come (to watch), because it reminds me of when we were at our peak (14 or 15 years ago). They have an answer for everything.”

Last night, the Red Raiders had all the right answers, too.

“We’re doing two things at once. Trying to build up the program with those younger kids on the bench and also compete,” Ricker said. “Right now, all five starters are healthy and they play really hard. As long as we can avoid foul trouble and do that, we have a chance.”

Jamestown plays Erie High School at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Hammermill Center, the home of Gannon University.

“We’re getting there,” Ricker said of his team’s progress through six games.
