Kennedy, Fenton Light It Up

Aidan Kennedy had a Senior Night to remember.

The 6-foot-2 guard poured in a school-record 42 points to highlight Southwestern's 78-64 Chautauqua-Cattaraugus Athletic Association Division 1 West basketball victory over Dunkirk on Thursday.

Kennedy, whose milestone evening broke the previous mark of 41 set in 1981 by Kevin Seiberg, connected on 13 field goals, including three from beyond the arc, and was 13 of 16 from the foul line. In addition, he collected six assists and had four rebounds and four steals.

"It was very special for him and his family," Trojans coach Aaron Emley said.

Kennedy had help, too.

Matthew Pannes scored 17 points to go along with six rebounds, six assists and six steals; and Jason Ni added 10 points and had four boards.

Southwestern led 16-15 after the first quarter, but gained separation by outscoring the Marauders 26-16 in the second quarter and held on in an evenly played second half.

Dunkirk was led by Marcel Carter with 21 points and Lorenzo Lewis with 19 points. Both scored three 3-pointers.

FENTON POURS IN 36 IN LOSS

FREWSBURG -- Frewsburg improved to 3-0 in the Central Division on Thursday.

The Bears had to overcome a career-high 36 points from Maple Grove's Tucker Fenton in the process.

Leading by two entering the fourth quarter, the Bears outscored the Red Dragons 29-18 over the final eight minutes to win 74-61.

Gavin Smith led four players in double figures for Frewsburg (4-5, 3-0) with 19 points while Zach Winters had 17, Jake Sears had a career-high 15 and Connor Murray chipped in 11.

"In the fourth quarter, we put a little half-court trap and sped up their guards into a lot of turnovers," Frewsburg head coach Rob Collver said. "We ran out in transition. It looked great. Whoever was open, we passed the ball to them. It was really a good team quarter. That's kind of who I thought we could be."

Fenton scored 6 points in the first quarter, 12 in the second, 4 in the third and 14 in the fourth for Maple Grove (5-3, 2-1).

"He's got a lot of tools. He can beat you down low, he can beat you off the dribble and he shoots 3s," Collver said of Fenton. "They were contested, tough shots. We did lose him a couple of times rotating, but he was a tough handle. He demanded the ball and did whatever he could to stem the tide."

Sears led Frewsburg with 10 rebounds; Winters had nine rebounds and five steals; Murray had six assists; and Zack Carr chipped in five assists.

RALLY FOR WIN

SINCLAIRVILLE -- Behind a big fourth quarter, Cassadaga Valley rallied for a 59-53 Central Division victory over Gowanda.

Trailing 41-36, the Cougars went on a 23-12 run in the final period to raise their record to 3-9 overall and 1-3 in the division.

Braden LeBaron had 16 points, Drake Pierce added 15 and Wyatt Harrington had 12 for the winners.

Gowanda (1-6, 0-3) was led by 16 points from Quentin Centner, and 12 apiece from John Ondus and John Smuda.

CARDINALS ROLL

RANDOLPH -- Randolph's defense was lights-out for four quarters.

The Cardinals' offense picked it up in the second half.

Taken together, it added up to a convincing 69-30 Central Division victory over Portville.

Gabe McCoy led a balanced attack with for Randolph (6-1, 3-0 with 17 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots; Jaiden Huntington had 13 points; Carson Conley added 12 points and five boards; Drew Hind collected 8 points, five rebounds, six assists and four steals; and Griffin Nelson dished out six assists and had three steals.

Maxx Yehl led the Panthers with 9 points.

PANTHERS WIN

PANAMA -- The Panama Panthers defeated the Falconer Golden Falcons 64-22 for a Division 2 West victory.

Panama got on Falconer early, outscoring the Golden Falcons 17-9 in the first quarter and 10-5 in the second for a 27-14 lead at halftime.

Gabe Roth was the leading scorer with 18 points, including four 3-pointers. He also had six assists, three rebounds and four steals. Bryce Hinsdale scored 10 points, handed out seven assists, grabbed seven rebounds and picked up four steals; and Tate Catanese had 12 points and nine rebounds.

Falconer's leading scorer was Jake Swanson with 9 points.
