Trojans Calimeri, Hoose Take 1st

SANBORN — Falconer/Cassadaga Valley was the top local team, finishing seventh with 107 points at the 31-team Linda C. Knuutila Memorial Tournament over the weekend at Niagara County Community College.

The Golden Cougars’ top individual finisher was Kyle Keefe, who took second at 172 pounds after being pinned in 3:13 during the final against Grand Island’s Brian Bielec. Austin Chase was third for Falconer/Cassadaga Valley, beating Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer’s Trent Burcanowski 4-3 in the 138-pound consolation final. Devyn Morrison was fifth for the Golden Cougars, pinning North Tonawanda’s Joseph Pasiak at 172 pounds; Dalton Caldwell was sixth after losing a 4-2 decision to Amherst’s Giovanni Russo at 152 pounds; Jacob Clark was seventh after beating Iroquois’ Ethan Pfeiffer 4-2 at 145 pounds; and Karsen DePasquale (132 pounds) and David Stein (215 pounds) both took eighth for Falconer/Cassadaga Valley.

Southwestern had two individual champions help the Trojans finish eighth with 99 points.

Carmine Calimeri won the 102-pound championship after earning a 15-9 decision over Frontier’s Cullen Edwards while Donate Hoose won the 215-pound title after earning a 3-2 decision over Braydon Vandenberg of Canisius. Kenji Walters finished sixth at 110 pounds for the Trojans after losing a 4-1 decision to Eden’s Bryce DellaPenta. Neves Hoose took seventh at 160 pounds after beating Sweet Home’s Cameron Millender 7-5 and Octavio Hoose took seventh at 189 pounds by virtue of a 5-1 decision over Starpoint’s Thomas Browne.

One champion helped Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer finished 10th with 96 points.

Jordan Joslyn won the 118-pound title with a 13-4 major decision over Frontier’s Travis Browning.

The Thunderbirds’ Carson Fairbank took seventh at 138 pounds with a 3:11 pin of Amherst’s Mark Testa while teammate Mason Maring took eighth at 172 pounds after losing 9-7 to Hamburg’s Jack Coots.

Luke Tomlinson took second at 152 pounds after getting pinned by Williamsville North’s Cameron Catrabone — the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler — in 1:12 as the Red Dragons finished 19th with 55 points. Maple Grove’s Matt Trim was fourth at 189 pounds, getting pinned by Lancaster’s Evan Stencel in 2:40, and Mason Kraft took seventh at 126 pounds with a 2-1 decision over Niagara Wheatfield’s Garrett Chase.

Jamestown was 26th with 31 points, led by Tyler Zwald’s eighth-place finish at 118 pounds.

Newfane won the team title with 161.5 points led by 132-pound champion Aidan Gillings and 189-pound champion Simon Lingle.

SANBORN — Portville’s Emlyee Bailey was named the Most Outstanding Wrestler after winning the 138-pound title during the Girls Division at the Linda C. Knuutila Memorial Wrestling Tournament this weekend at Niagara County Community College.

Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Brooklyn Pryll won the 110-pound championship with a 2:44 pin of North Tonawanda’s Hannah McCarley.

At 126 pounds, Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer’s Alax Siliano pinned teammate Gabriella Testa in 1:14.

Bailey pinned Lewiston-Porter’s Meghan Edwards in 1:48 at 138 pounds.

At 145 pounds, Iroquois’ Michaela Thomas earned a 6-5 decision over Frontier’s Amelia Drew.

At 152 pounds, West Seneca’s Christina Evans earned a 6-0 decision over Lewiston-Porter’s Gwyneth Edwards.

In third-place matches, Falconer/Cassadaga Valley’s Akira Smith pinned Orchard Park’s Marissa Tara at 110 pounds; Chautauqua Lake/Westfield/Panama/Clymer’s Mia Smith pinned teammate Madison Szymanowski in 4:45 at 138 pounds; and Orchard Park’s Molly Tavenner pinned teammate Sophia Saffring in 1:11 at 145 pounds.
