PANAMA -- The calendar says it's the first week in December, but Panama and Southwestern played a girls basketball game that had all the makings of a playoff contest in early March.
Mandy Brink poured in 33 points, including 12 in the decisive fourth quarter, to lift the Panthers to a thrilling 62-59 victory over Southwestern in a nonleague game Thursday night.
The 5-foot-6 junior also collected six rebounds, seven assists and eight steals, and junior Lillian Odell added 12 points, including a couple of 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.
Panama needed all those contributions to offset a brilliant 31-point effort by the Trojans' Reece Beaver. The sophomore guard drilled eight 3-pointers, and had five steals and five assists.
"Probably two of the better point guards in Western New York battling it out," Panthers coach Dennis Hinsdale said. "Two great players, two great teams. Everybody played hard and left it on the floor. It was a good game."
Panama led 24-22 at halftime, but Southwestern took a 40-36 advantage into the fourth quarter. In the final eight minutes, the hosts outscored the Trojans, 26-19 and held on for the victory.
Brink had 12 points in the fourth quarter, including five from the foul line. Beaver kept it close by drilling four shots from beyond the arc.
"We had a hand in her face," Hinsdale said, "but she took a hard dribble in and just stuttered back and, bang, good shot. … When you've got Reece Beaver (hitting) the 3, no lead is comfortable."
